The Lesser of Two Weasels?

“I will not vote for the lesser of two evils.” Luckily, my choices have never been that bad. I am not aware of an election in which I’ve been cognizant that didn’t include the “two evils” embroidery. So next time some private from the tin-foil helmet brigade hyperbolizes to the point of incredulity; the adults in the room need to stand up. Make sure that the drunken uncle makes it back to the lithium line.

“The lesser of two evils?” What did George H. W. Bush do that was so bad? His hand didn’t remember what his lips said as he signed a bill raising taxes – that’s bad but not sure it rises to the level of evil, even if you’re Grover Norquist. He dropped a line about “10,000 points of light” that sounded to some like the commissar of the New World Order and I don’t mean Hulk Hogan; of course, he was talking about individuals acting charitably, not 16,000 new IRS agents acting “in your best interest”.

If the scalded frog can look back from where we are now, I think he’d long for the days of “grocery-scanner” George and the cozy bath water that was 1992. Not one person, outside the guy who dresses as Patrick Henry at the Tuesday Night Tea-Party meeting, could call old H.W. “evil” in light of the new Democrat Party.

Was H.W. endorsed by the Communist Party U.S.A.? Was he in favor of “shelving” babies born of a botched abortion until they starve to death? Was he instructing military chaplains that they can conduct same sex marriages on base, but better not close their prayers “in Jesus name”? Did he stuff the American economy into a visqueen lined trunk with a shovel and a bag of lye? Well then, case closed Matlock.

America has rarely had to pick the lesser of two evils. So what about Romney vs. Obama? Does a well-coiffed RINO robed in Mormon mithril rise to the level of the arch-villain in a Bond flick? Not hardly. For anyone whose sleeves don’t tie in the back, this election is more the choice between a hemlock and a lukewarm, flat Fresca than it is Castro and Batista. Let’s not impale the good for the perfect.

Yes, H.W. Bush was good; George W. Bush was good and Mitt Romney is good. Our expectations have to be a bit lower than Nigel’s amp; but that’s not conceding some metaphysical compromise with darkness.
So what do I expect out of Mitt Romney? – Not very much. Let me put it to you this way: the American people have been hit by a truck called Barack Obama. We’re lying split open on the side of the road, our guts hanging out, going in and out of consciousness and slipping into shock. If Obama gets re-elected, he’ll circle the truck for another pass. All I’m expecting Mitt Romney to do is to put pressure on the wound, maybe elevate our feet, put a blanket on us, tell us to hang in there – “stay with me now” and call 911 (the tea-party revolution).

All that I expect out of Guy Smiley is a solid pick for Vice President (Done!);stem the tide on the outrageous spending; free up the machine that is capitalism; unleash hell on our enemies; add a couple of trustworthy Supreme Court justices and bring the damn bust of Winston Churchill back into the oval office.

So please, for the sake of all that is sacred in this life and the next; let us stop speaking of the lesser of two evils. The Republicans and the Democrats are not morally equivalent and Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are not even in the same galactic cluster.

But will Mitt Romney be a bigger disappointment for conservatives than the Compassionate Conservative? Well, one bit of leverage is that Congress will be considerably more Tea Party sensitive then it was under George W. Bush; a good starting point. Paul Ryan is also a major bright spot. However, before the conservative mosh pit breaks out into a joyful snoopy dance, we must consider a glaring personal blind spot.

Republicans and Conservatives are hyper-ventilating about two bits of great news this week: A NEWSWEEK cover story telling Barack Obama to “Get Hence” and Dinesh D’Souza’s 2016 movie which outperformed Bourne and Batman in the theaters over the weekend. Although both pieces are devastating to the Commander in Thief and may signify the tolling bell; they are short-sighted in one important detail. They only detail Barack Obama’s relationship to the economy and completely ignore just how devastating his administration has been to the moral climate in America.

There’s no mention of the Infanticide Presidency or the First Gay President or the war on Religious Freedom and the First Amendment. The silence is stunning. The Romney campaign seems to be following suit. This is a sign of what is to come.

At the height of the Chick-fil-A controversy and just following a reaffirmation of the Boy Scouts rules against openly homosexual Scout leaders, Romney reiterates how the Scouts are wrong and that they should allow homosexuals. I think it’s safe to say that George W. Bush would never have thrown the Boy Scouts under the rainbow bus. Add to this the apparent stiff arm to Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and other tea-party favorites from the Convention’s speakers roll and you get an underlying tone that is, let’s just say, uncomfortable.

So before we throw our palm branches down on Pennsylvania Avenue and adorn Mitt Romney with the Gipper’s mantle, I have one warning that the Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said regarding libertarian-leaning Republicans that were erring in the same manner as the Romney handlers:

“They don’t know America. They don’t understand America. If all you think all we need to do is cut government and reduce taxes, you don’t understand America. America is a moral enterprise not an economic enterprise.”
