Oh, Ladies: Obama voted “present” on protecting rape victims in ’99 state Senate vote

In a 1999 legislative vote, then-Illinois State Senator Barack Obama was the sole state senator to not vote for for a bill that would protect sexual assault victims from having the details of their cases revealed publicly.

On May 11 of that year, Obama voted “present” on a bill, ultimately made law, that allows victims of sex crimes to request that their cases be sealed from public view following a criminal conviction. Illinois Senate voting records show that Obama was the only senator who did not vote in favor of the bill.

Obama’s unique objection to voting for a bill meant to protect victims of sex crimes is a substantial departure from the picture he has attempted to paint for women voters.

Second he voted present on criminal cases. Here’s a quote “The public policy of record sealing balances the desire to free named citizens from the burdens of caused by the information contained in state records while maintaining the state’s interest in the preservation of records that may be beneficial to the state or other citizens.” Sealing cases makes it like it never happened, in many states they get completely destroyed. Though victims may want to never hear about the incident again is it wise to seal records that in turn might also protect the criminal? If he gets released after some time and gets caught again they can’t use sealed cases against him because it makes them obsolete. Currently cases are usually sealed for situations like closed adoptions, juvenile criminal records, witness protection are partly sealed and cases involving trade or state secrets.
