Whiny Atheist Alert: ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ Violates the Constitution

Good grief! Charlie Brown is in the middle of a contentious religious fight. A group of parents are fighting an Arkansas elementary school over a field trip to see a stage production of ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ at a church. Fox News religion contributor Father Jonathan Morris weighed in on the controversy today on Fox and Friends.

Father Morris asked, “Who would be afraid of their children going to watch a classic Charlie Brown story like this?”

He said, “The fact that we have the right to free speech for all means that there’s going to be also an opportunity and a probability that there will also be people who will do stupid, ignorant and totally out of line things like protesting the fact that Charlie Brown is going to be presented, and his Christmas story presented to kids.”

  Quite true. Though these folks complaining are calling themselves “atheists” I think it would be more accurate to call them “communists” or “anti-Americans”. The atheists I know all love Christmas and I’m one of them. Then again, we are also all pro-American and anti-Communist atheists too. We like religious tolerance and the Constitution too. I know I am a member of a small and generally unpopular religious minority, so why in the would would it be hard for me to understand the value of religious tolerance (and the predominance of it in the USA)? I suspect that these guys probably have a very different agenda and it’s not about American culture or religious tolerance, or anything like that.

I say “Merry Christmas,” I send Christmas cards (but not those with a strong overt Deistic message) and I have no problems if someone wishes me a Happy Hannukah or whatever. People like these who want to censor other people’s free speech and expression are nuts and, as Doug says, are more like radical muslims than they are Americans. Yes, absolutely, keep your kids home if you think Charlie Brown is subversive, but don’t force your beliefs on others.

  I’m an atheist too, and I have a lot of atheist friends as well (and a lot of non-atheist ones too) and every one of the has a Christmas tree, gives and receives gifts, and says “Merry Christmas” to people in December and I am sure that none of them would have any problem watching Charlie Brown Christmas or having their kids watch it. Of course I don’t believe that there’s anything supernatural about Christmas but it is an important part of our common culture and it’s a positive and fun aspect of being an American and that’s why I love it and that’s why the people who are attacking it are attacking it. They despise American culture and want to see it destroyed. We should all stand up against this kind of nonsense, *especially* us atheists since it is being attacked in our names.

My grandson has a Festivus concert tomorrow – they will play ONE (1) Christmas piece. He said there is ONE (1) kid in the 7th grade band who is non-Christian (can we still say Muslim?) so no Christmas music allowed. In fact, the concert is being held in November to avoid any connection to Dec 25th at all…and this is in an affluent OHIO suburb!

  Hold on there champ. The US Constitution guarantees citizens the right to say anything they want. It tells the government that it may not do certain things but it doesn’t tell the people that they can’t do anything.It’s all about limits on the government and a little bit of empowerment to do 17 specific things (not that they pay any attention to those limits or stick to those 17 things, but that’s another post). You can’t prosecute citizens for unconstitutional behavior.

        I reread it, it still says “commie schools”. Our school system may be many things, many negative things, but it is NOT communist. Communism is an ideology in which there is no private property, everything is owned by the “state”. And in no school do I know of no one being able to posses personal property with the exception of some stringent boarding school examples (nothing specific). Americans are far to quick to throw around the word Communism to describe everything they disagree with, similar to the way some other Americans are too quick and eager to throw around the words “racism” and “hate”.

  Here’s one atheist who would not want his kid to be indoctrinated the way you describe. Being educated about various religions and cultures is fine, but I would sure protest in a hurry if I thought my kids were being required to participate in any of them. It’s hard to define the line between those, but think of it in terms of sex. You might well expect your kids to receive sex education, but very few of us would support them getting sex training.

    There is a difference between a religious/ cultural education and being forced to participate. Somethings may be done and shown to add a hands on effect, but that person is not being forced to worship or pray to Buddha, or Allah, or any other deity they may be learning about. And there is a far cry between your example of sex and religion.

  My suggestion is that you stand on principle. Stand on the principle of individual rights. That’s a position that every decent and reasonable person in the country can agree on, the vast majority of atheists included. Let the other guys explain why it is that they think an intolerant and exclusionary policy (theirs) should be imposed against the people they don’t like (traditional Christians in this case) and watch them squirm. Don’t try to beat them at their own game.
  
  If instead you take the position that some on this thread have that “This is a Christian country and Christianity deserves special deference and exceptions etc.” and that makes it about a narrow, sectarian, and unprincipled position that can only count on support by Christians. That’s not the way to go. Stick with the universal principle and then stick with it in principled way. If they want to start their own schools, let them do it. If they want to pull their own kids out of the play, by all means let them do it. If they want to walk around like sour pusses at Christmas time snapping at anybody who says “Merry Christmas” it’s their right to do that too, but seriously, who wants to be that kind of person? Or pay attention to that kind of person? Clearly nobody. That’s how you win in the long run.

      What the country was founded on was a set of moral principles that can be agreed on by people of all sorts of religions and none too. They basically say that we should do whatever we want as long as we don’t abuse others. I can wholeheartedly support that as a way that we can all live together in peace. It has worked pretty well for a long time too. Alas, the government is changing that these days and trying to change that and allow those in power to abuse the rest of us. Sometimes those in power are religious, some are not. Some are in agreement with me on various issues and sometimes not, but whether I like what those in power are forcing on people or not, it’s wrong to do that.
      
      I’m curious what you mean by “murder of family”. Are you talking about something involved in killing people or about gays living together? The former is obviously something the law should get involved in and the latter just the opposite.
      
      As for my relatives, why would they not be happy? Pretty much all of them know and not one has had a harsh word or raised an eyebrow. Why should they? Are you assuming that they are intolerant of people who disagree with them about religion?

If the parents (atheist) don’t want their children going on this field trip, than keep them home or they can stay in school for the day and read from the Obama Marxist play book. The atheist in this country have joined forces with the Muslims and they are doing a good job of using the same Muslim tactics. But at least we know who are enemies are. I will say this, watch what happens when an Atheist parent sees their child in a hospital, etc… wait for them to drop on their knees and pray for God’s help or watch them run out of a burning building, crying for God’s help.   I don’t know what attacking Nietzsche has to do with any of this, but for the record, there is no indication in his voluminous letters and other records that he was gay. He was certainly socially awkward and he never married, but that’s not the same thing as being gay.
  
  As for the cause of his illness later in life, there’s no proof that it was syphilis, though it is a possibility. One reason to doubt this is the rapidity of the onset of his mental decline and what set it off. He had been at a party and seemed as mentally together as ever and when he walked outside he saw a man violently beating a horse. He struggled with the man and was never quite right in the head again after that.
