Q: Shouldn’t we ban assault weapons?
A: All weapons are “assault” weapons and almost anything can be a weapon. By this statement, I take it that you’re in favor of banning high-heeled shoes, pillows, knives, guns, hockey sticks, baseball bats, coasters, automobiles, tools, furniture, some varieties of plants, laundry detergent, wasp spray, wine bottles, etc…

Q: Okay, well, why not just assault rifles?
A: There is no such thing as an assault rifle. Guns come in two varieties: automatic and semi-automatic. You can read here where Dana Loesch schools libs on the differences, and since most people here know guns, I won’t bore you with an extensive definition.

Q: But do you really need a high capacity magazine or a shotgun with a pistol grip?
A: I don’t know, do you really “need” a car? Do you really “need” a boat? Cars kill a lot more people than guns, and you have no Constitutional right to own a car.

Very thoughtful. It is painfully evident by the legions of liberals commenting on LaPierres’s speech today, that these people are not thinking.

Regarding the Second Amendment and high capacity magazines, obviously the same rational would apply to machine guns and grenades. If we are okay with some degree of restricting a person’s right to keep and bear arms, and the left wants to further go after our high capacity mags, then its about time we start restricting free speech. I for one would be willing to compromise and trade my 20 round Tapco for the complete removal of bloody violence from movies and video games.

I also think every gun owner would be willing to make that trade.

  I don’t currently own a gun, but I would NOT make that trade. I don’t believe the ‘benefit’ you seen in banning violence in movies is as real as you think. I also see BOTH restrictions as setting precedent for further restrictions NEITHER of us would accept.

  My 6th great uncle said, “Anyone willing to give up liberties in exchange for security deserves neither”. When Patrick Henry saw a man in the stockades being whipped, he asked what his crime was, to which they responded, ‘he would not buy a license to preach’ and from that, he went to the Continental Congress and made his famous speech of ‘Give me liberty or give me death’.
  Also, just one small note, the 30 round magazine is a “standard capacity” magizine for the AR-15. They also come in 10, 20, 30, 60 and 100 round capacity.The police and military have them, and therefore, we should have them also. I own several weapons and none of them have ever hurt anyone in the 20+ years I have had them.
  My car on the other hand has killed several squirrels, and sadly a dog. I had a truck that killed a deer, but that was a very mean truck. I got rid of it…

I’ve often wondered what a pistol grip on a shotgun has anything to do with regulating it. Does it make it more of a shotgun? Does it make it more deadly? I don’t think so. What we’re talking about here is not only an infringement of my rights, but a fear of “look alike” weapons. It looks like an assault rifle so it has to be more deadly. Please thats a very lame argument.

Unless you allow me to refer to your assault coffee, I reject the classification of ANY weapon I don’t use for assault as an assault weapon. A FULL AUTO, belt fed rifle is NOT an assault weapon when used for defense.

        it was supposed to be an AR-15 but I watched the video of the cops inspecting it.it was NOT an AR-15,the picture was of the standard bad quality but you could see the cop pulling back a bolt on the right side-a feature no AR type rifle has.further it looked smaller than the normal ak copy,it did look somewhat like an sks.with the normal quality of anti-second amendment cops out there we may never know what it is.it could be a semi-auto 22.

        Actually, there is an entity defined as an “assault rifle”–it is a weapon that uses an intermediate cartridge size (between a rifle and a handgun) and is “select fire” (able to fire in either semi- or full-automatic mode); this is an official designation by the military. What most people misname as an “assault rifle” is really what the Media and anti-gunners call an “assault weapon” and is any semi-automatic firearm that looks similar to a true “assault rifle” but cannot fire in the full-automatic mode (many rounds with a single trigger pull). Fully-automatic arms are not strictly “illegal” except in certain states; however, legal ownership of them requires a lot of paperwork, including fingerprints, photographs, a background investigation by the FBI, and payment of a $200 tax (every time the ownership changes hands). So-called “assault weapons” (the semi-automatic guns) are no more deadly than any other less-scary-looking semi-automatic guns, and actually are less deadly than most hunting rifles because they use less powerful ammunition. Concern about large-capacity (really “normal capacity”) magazines is foolish, because it takes very little time to change to a fresh magazine and there have been few attempts to attack a shooter even when reloads have been done–why would anyone think the size of the magazine would matter?

        I just bought me a M-4 177 Crosman bb gun. I only bought it cause it was made by Crosman(great bb guns) and it was cheaper than the rest. But it looks like an M-4. From a distance you can tell a difference. But still it is a bb gun. No license required. It sits on a shelf for any a certain age to buy. Now if someone walked into a store to rob someone with it,that person would scare the hell out of everyone there. Cause till you hold it and see how light it is you cant tell.

        barto,….I point out that ‘automatic’ weapons (class 3) are NOT ILLEGAL if one has the proper permits and approved storage for the weapon AND ammunition. There are VERY STRICT regulations for class 3 owners but machine guns ARE legal within those regulations.

        Well automatics arent illegal. They just make getting them really costly. I have friends who have one. the tax stamp on that thing is around 5 grand I think. Then you got to have the money to buy one. Which can go for around 12,000. But if you can pass the background check and pay for it then you can own it. I wouldnt want to because of the hassle you will have in the future. But doesnt mean it illegal.

        I would offer a correction: circa 1790′s “well regulated” meant to be well ‘versed’ or well ‘practiced’ in the use of their arms. If that is what you meant by “militarized” then you are correct. To be well-regulated means having practiced reloads, clearing malfunctions, moving, cover & concealment, presentation from holster, balancing speed and accuracy, etc. ‘Well-regulated’ refers to the *exercise* of the right to keep and bear.

      Assault weapons are only available to members of the military. They have a selector switch on them, which can be used to go from semi-auto (pull trigger fires one round) and auto (pull trigger and hold) fires rounds until you release the trigger or you expend the rounds in your magazine.

    I agree Steven, I made a point the other day when asked why I have an “assault weapon”. The questioner was asking me about my AR-15. I told the questioner, that my AR is not an assault weapon. I have never assaulted anyone or anything with it (well OK, maybe a tree while I was target practicing). It is used as a defensive weapon.

  My ex-boss was a Major with the Air force Office of Special Investigations and he sent me a video of the Medical Examiner on the Sandy Hook Shooting. The ME stated that Adam Lanza used the Bushmaster in the slaying and that he did not use the “Four (4) pistols that were found in the shooting area” The video was a clip showing that the Responders were retreiving the Bushmaster from the Trunk of the car he used. If the rifle was in the car what did he shoot himself with. Seems to be a bit of an inconsistency here.

Why did our Founding Father’s believe this? Among the Second Amendments primary reasons to be included in the Bill of Rights (and listed second in importance) is the ultimate deterrent to a rogue government. However, who would ever believe America would elect, much less re-elect open traitors to political office in the country. Nah, that possibility is just too insane to contemplate.

  Since the gov & “o” has control of the state’s militia, what are we the citizens to do but arm and organize ourselves. Our Constitution clearly states that we have that right. It did not limit the type of weapons we are to possess. Did any of the militias own cannons at that time? Yes, they were not prevented from owning cannons. That simple fact shows that the founding fathers did not intend the ownership of weapons to be limited.

nit picking but, During the revolution our sharpshooters, IE Minute men had
rifles. They were the most advanced weapon of the time in civilian hands. Until
the 1920, the civilians had better weapons than the military, or the same
weapons.

Gotta say there is some inaccurate statements. I would strive to be as accurate as possible when trying to convince a liberal of anything. They will grab on to the slightest inaccuracy and rant on it til the actual conversation or anser is obsecured by a new stupid rant.

An example is; There are more then 2 types of rifles. You also have the side by sides, bolt actions and pump rifles and the single shot with the break actions. Pay attention know what your talking about!

I have always believed that if liberals and other educated dimwits interpreted the 2nd Amendment the way they interpreted the 1st Amendment, that gun ownership would be mandatory. It is easy to point out to one of these dim bulbs, that the meaning and syntax of the 2nd Amendment is absolute, by changing the subject of the 2nd, from “arms” to “books.” For instance: “A informed and literate society, being necessary to the security of a free state. The right of the people to keep and read books shall not be infringed.” If they are bright and honest, and that is holding out a lot of hope, you may not win them over, but they seem to tolerate the idea that gun ownership is a right not to be tinkered with, watered down, or violated in any way, by any guvmint authority.

My only issue with this article is:

There are actually two versions of the Second Amendment:

1. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” as passed by Congress;

and

The commas and capitalization make ALL the difference.The one the states ratified (2) clearly means the states wanted to maintain the ability to repel the federal government in the case where the federal government tries to assert too much power (as it is doing today). As stated in (2) “… security of a free state” or the state of being free, as opposed to what is says in (1) “….security of a free State” as in the country.

However, many still cling to the one Congress passed (1) which can be interpreted to mean the security of the US a s a whole.

As stated in (2) “… security of a free state” or the state of being free, as opposed to what is says in (1) “….security of a free State” as in the country.

I prefer to use the one as ratified by the states, as without the states’ approval, the State would not exist.

How is a militia well regulated? Well, first, it needs not to abuse the people it is supposed to protect. It does not quarter troops in private homes, slaughter farm animals for food, rape civilian women, etc. Right? It does the job it is supposed to do and does not abuse its power. Now…what does a citizen’s right to bear arms have to do with regulating a militia? Simple. It warns soldiers and their commanders that they cannot exploit the population with impunity. What do you think, folks? Does this make sense? Otherwise, I cannot understand what James Madison meant when he used that introductory phrase. The right to keep and bear arms, commonly know as Second Amendment rights, are, in fact, not dependent upon the Second Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right, and is necessary to be able to enjoy the right to self defense. Like the other rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights, they are fundamental rights. They, like the the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence are among the “self evident” rights. Are the rights to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” no longer in existence because they are not enumerated in the Constitution? All the rights enumerated still exist,even without the Bill of Rights. The US Constitution exists, not to grant rights, but to limit Government power. Strictly speaking, the term “Constitutional Rights” is a misnomer.

Note also, when the Founding Fathers spoke of self defense, they didn’t mean just defense from common criminals. They also included self defense against the Government, and in their writings they show that they felt that the public, the people had the right to any weapons the military had, so as to be in a position to resist them.

The whole Bill of Rights was considered superfluous by many of the Founding Fathers. It was insisted on by men, who, in this day and age would have the mindset of a safety engineer. That fact alone provides a reason why Barack Obama is pushing for more and more taxes, even though he realizes it may reduce revenue, but it will provide more control over those very rich people. In many cases in administrating that control governments became so paranoid they began murdering the populations. In the twentieth century over 170 million citizens were murdered by their governments for that very reason. That will happen every time when governments become the sole and complete power. The statement; Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely, is completely true. These facts have been known for centuries so why do “we the people” allow it to happen here? I suggest to you, it is ignorance. Anyone desiring confirmation for that just watch the “man on the street interviews” the proof is there.

The most immediate problem we now have on the horizon is Republican representatives discussing closing the “gun show loophole” . This is a complete misnomer—there’s no such thing! A “loophole” in a law is a flaw in the wording that enables a creative “interpretation” which permits breaking the law in some unanticipated way.

When the Brady Bill was being negotiated in both houses of congress, a proviso added to the bill specifically exempting the transfer of privately owned firearms to eligible buyers from the requirement of a pre-purchase background check. The reasons for this are simple.

Because private individuals are given no access to the NICS background check system and would be unable to perform the necessary investigation into the potential buyer’s history.

Such transfer could be performed by a licensed gun dealer, however , the law cannot force the licensed dealer to do the background check for a private buyer, nor, if he does perform the background check for the private buyer, could he be required to do it for free. In fact, he could charge WHATEVER he wanted. The holder of the firearms license isn’t in business to lose money by helping a private gun owner compete with him by selling his used rifle for $100 less than a new one that the gunshop has in stock. All the licensed dealer has to do is price his background check fee high enough to drive up the cost of the privately owned rifle until it’s more expensive than a new one. Then, the buyer would simply abandon the private seller, and buy the new one from the gun shop.

Private owners of guns would find themselves unable to sell their weapons to anyone but a licensed dealer, and dealers would be under no obligation to pay fair market value,they could pay as little as they wanted, and the seller would have no choice
but to sell their $1000 rifle for pennies on the dollar, or turn it into the local police for free.

If the government really wanted to address this issue—and I’m not suggesting that they should– all they’d have to do is grant private sellers access to the NICS system. Because the seller—licensed or not—doesn’t see any confidential information, or learn the details surrounding the rejection of a buyer, there’s no good reason for denying access to the NICS system to private sellers. The federal government simply doesn’t want to. The truth is, the government isn’t really concerned about guns “falling into wrong hands”, it’s only concerned with exercising greater control over access to guns by ANYBODY but government.

The question about “all people in the United States being able to run around with guns” sounds just like the majority of female liberal anti- gun people. NO one should ever “run around” with guns unless they are well trained and in the line of duty or life and death . Running with scissors is also a no no. Before the lady’s who read this get the wrong idea, I specified female anti- gun people because they do for the most part seem to be the silliest when talking about this subject that they have strong opinion and no fact about. The anti- gun men are usually just dumb and not very capable of common sense thought or behavior that would be described as beneficial to themselves or others in a life or death situation or survival mode.They have to hire someone to do most everything for them and no doubt they are gung ho for hiring an armed guard if it was their life or property at stake.

Whats really amazing is that when this kid used only hand guns and left the rifle in his trunk they still insist that he used it an assault rifle.What did he go out to the parking lot and reload and put it back in to his trunk.Why don’t they give the truth about what state of mind he was in.No they would rather go after the guns as having high capacity clips.Maybe if he only had a gun that didn’t reload its self he would have changed his mind.What if he took the pencils from them and used them to stick in their brains would you be going after the bad pencils?The problem is that they can’t forgive them selves from releasing the insane on to the public by closing the institutions.They alone are to fault for all of the mass killings not the guns.

The hue and cry against the AR-platform and large magazines is purely an emotions-based screed. A trained marksman with any .30-caliber rifle commonly used for deer hunting, can inflict a ton of mayhem. British infantry in WWI and WWII firing the Lee-Enfield bolt action rilfle could fire 20 aimed shots per minute at ranges up to 1,000 yards. A bulldog is ugly, but a pitbull is more dangerous.

The Army uses full auto weapons most frequently for defensive purposes. The SAW, Squad Automatic Weapon is designed to provide cover from attacking forces. It is a defensive weapon. Even the high rate of fire minigun is used to suppress fire. The three round burst from an M-16/M-4 may be used to attack or assault or as a defensive effort.

I would improve Michelle’s comments “Guns come in two varieties: automatic and semi-automatic.” to 6 varieties. Belt fed automatic (100 to 200 round belt), up to 30 round clip fed automatic, semi-auto with a three round burst, semi-auto with one shot fired per trigger pull, magazine fed repeat fire requiring a pump, bolt or lever action, and pure single shot requiring a hand reload of a round between shots. The first 3 are for military or police use and are all but unaffordable for the common citizen to obtain and use. The last three have been common in the hunting, sport shooting and self-defense communities for a century or more. The ‘assault’ term is based on the mindset of the gun user. Even a pure single shot firearm can be used as an assault weapon. Military snipers may use a single shot weapon. I would term any sniper situation to be an assault situation. Assault just means an offensive effort.

Even the military reserves ‘assault’ for a specific category of weapons. The M-16/M-4 is called an assault rifle yet is offers full auto (often disabled), 3 round burst, and semi-auto fire. The M-14 is termed a Battle rifle yet the Obama administration has labeled the civilian counterpart as an assault riffle.

Does a pistol grip on a hand gun make it a assault hand gun? Competitive shooters usually shoot firearms with a pistol grip, often by having a stock with a thumb hole.

This is not about banning certain weapons. It is about starting the dominoes of banning all weapons.

If they use the term assault weapon as a classification,

as assault weapons! Who is that person? What qualifies them? Would it be home
