Casualties of War, Memorial Day 2013

A perfectly understandable reaction, yet many struggle with “survivor’s guilt“.  The pervading question they can never answer is “How come it was him, and not me?”  In a scenario where the stakes are 70-odd years of living, raising a family and having a career and life vs. foregoing all of that in the blink of an eye somewhere far away from home and family, that is a truly haunting conundrum.

This weekend as we pause to honor those who died in combat, let’s not forget to honor the families who lost them.  Let us also not forget to honor those survivors who still carry the scars of losing their buddies.  They made it home again, but a part of them fell in battle, too.

Thank you, veterans.  May God bless you and grant you the peace you deserve.
