Fairy Tales of Gay Gestapo, Part 3: Matthew Shepard’s ‘Gay Martyrdom’

You’ve no doubt heard the old joke about the man who got a ride home from a co-worker, and popped the glove box open to look for a Kleenex, only to find a pair of lacy panties. “Who’s are these?!” the thunderstruck man asked. “Mine,” his friend replied. “Seriously? How long have you been wearing these?” the first man asked, still a little shaken. “Ever since my wife found them there in the glove box. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”

That’s how our friends on the Left are. Once they come up with a story, no matter how absurd or how many mountains of facts are assembled to prove it’s a myth, they stick to it.

Case in point: Gay martyr, or as one reporter called him “a national symbol for violence against gays,” 21 year-old Matthew Shepard, who was brutally murdered in 1998 in Laramie, WY. His killers Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson tortured him and left the “bright, sensitive freshman” to die, tied to a fence, allegedly because he was a homosexual.

Media reports have presented images of the fence evocative of the Crucifixion, and reporters could not resist actually calling the crime just that.  His canonization is celebrated in a play, The Laramie Project, which is regularly performed in American high schools and colleges, and has its own YouTube channel. His case was used to justify expansion of federal “hate crime” (read thought crime) legislation to include crimes against homosexuals and transgendered people. His name continues to be synonymous with senseless violence against homosexuals, and those who persist in promoting the myth of perpetual homosexual victimhood wave the Matthew Shepard bloody shirt at every opportunity.

Last month’s celebration of the fact that finally an open homosexual is playing in a major national sport, which is bound to become a national holiday very soon, featured many heart-warming accounts of Jason Collins, the NBA’s First Gay, meeting with Matthew Shepard’s parents. For example Fox News:

After his eight-minute cameo in Brooklyn’s 112-89 win over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night, the first openly gay athlete in America’s four major sports met with the parents of slain Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard.

Shepard was tortured and murdered in 1998 because he was gay. Collins wears his No. 98 jersey in Shepard’s honor.

And ABC News:

Brooklyn Nets center Jason Collins met privately with the parents and brother of the late Matthew Shepard following the team’s 112-89 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night at Pepsi Center.

The player gave Dennis and Judy Shepard an autographed No. 98 black and white jersey, and laughter could be heard throughout the 10-minute meeting.

Collins, who became the first active openly gay player in NBA history Sunday after signing a 10-day contract with the Nets, wears No. 98 in honor of Shepard, who was beaten, tortured and murdered in a 1998 anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming.

That last one is especially surprising, since it was ABC News, in a 20/20 report by Elizabeth Vargas, that destroyed the myth of Matthew Shepard’s gay martyrdom. He and his killers were all part of the same meth drug scene in Laramie. He was not killed because of his homosexuality. In fact, many in Laramie believe that Mr. McKinney and Matthew Shepard had had sex with each other.

Another widely held belief about the case is that McKinney and Shepard had never met before their fateful encounter at the Fireside Lounge. But a number of sources tell 20/20 the two were not strangers.

“Everybody knew Matt Shepard was a partier just like Aaron, just like the rest of us,” said Bopp.

In fact, Bopp said he had seen Shepard and McKinney together at parties. “Aaron was selling [drugs] and him and Matt would go off to the side and they’d come back. And Matt would be doing some meth then,” he said.

Though they frequented the same party scene, McKinney maintains he had never met Shepard before the night of the crime and wonders why people might say he had. “I’ve never met him. … Maybe they seen us somewhere in the same spot or something. I don’t know,” McKinney said.

A bartender familiar with the local drug scene, who asked to be identified only as “Jean,” says she was friendly with Shepard. She also says McKinney and Shepard knew each other.

When she learned of the beating, she said, she recalls thinking, “It’s either money or dope, yeah. He’d be the perfect target especially because Aaron knew him.”

Another Laramie resident, Elaine Baker, says she also saw McKinney and Shepard together in a social situation. Several weeks before the murder, she spent a night on the town in Doc O’Connor’s limousine with a group that included both McKinney and Shepard.

“In the back of the limo, there was me, Stephanie, Doc, Aaron, Matthew Shepard,” she said.

Unfortunately, if the Left’s handmaidens in academia and the legacy media have anything to say about it, reality will continue to take a back seat to fairy tales like the Matthew Shepard myth. For the gay gestapo, truth matters less than advancing the agenda. Have I mentioned it lately? The Left considers the truth “a subjective construct,” which is another of saying, as I often do, the Left lies.
