Aranofsky’s Movie Reminds Us: Nothing New About Noah

The big box office buzz this past weekend was all about the opening of the movie Noah. The Hollywood Reporter gushed, “Noah Wins Over Faith-Based and Mainstream Audiences….” On the other hand, Breitbart reported that people “hated” the flick. Numerous Christians panned the film for its anti-biblical portrayal. The opening line of the movie, “in the beginning there was nothing,” is definitely a contradiction of Biblical theology. Genesis is clear that “In the beginning, God created…” and John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” At least the film maker, Darren Aronofsky, was honest enough to tell the Telegraph that the movie is “the least biblical biblical film ever made.” The film promotes evolution and radical environmentalism. In the movie, the flood is supposedly caused by man’s wickedness towards the environment.

All of this reminded me of another verse of scripture. Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 says, “… and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it may be said, See, this is new? It has already been in days of old, which were before us.” There is nothing new about Hollywood, and liberals in general, perverting the truth and denigrating Christianity. There is nothing new about the left promoting a one sided, politically correct, version of science and attempting, too often successfully, to silence alternative viewpoints.

The evolution debate is only one example of this. There are credible, knowledgeable scientists who reject macro evolution in favor of intelligent design. But, they are silenced. See Ben Stein’s Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. for an expose of how scientists who fail to tow the evolution banner are expelled from campuses. This occurs in spite of significant evidence pointing to intelligent design and no transitional links in the fossil record to support macro evolution.

We see the same bias in the global warming debate. Leftists continually claim that the science is settled, while thousands of climate scientists disagree and the average earth temperature has not increased in over ten years.

But, in these troubled times, people are starved for entertainment and, like the ancient Romans, even Christians will throng the theater to see Christianity thrown to the lions. What is sad is that a true biblical account of what really happened could have been more entertaining. There is a great deal of scientific evidence to support that a global flood occurred. Recently, for example, Robert Ballard, the man who found the Titanic shipwreck, discovered an ancient shoreline 400’ below the surface of the Black Sea. And there have been numerous reports of what appears to be the remains of an ancient shipwreck on the slopes of Mt. Ararat.

There are some scientists and Bible scholars who believe that ancient man in Noah’s day may have been technologically advanced. That brings more meaning to the scripture in Eccl. 1:9-10. Certainly, based on the biblical dimensions of the ark (450’ long) it would have compared more to a modern super tanker than the cartoon depictions seen in children’s stories. At least the director of the movie got that part correct. No cave man could build something like that. It would require modern tools and techniques. What if ancient man was as technologically advanced as we are? That would add an interesting twist to the movie. In fact, Jesus said that when He returned, society would be just like the days of Noah. Of course, that could be interpreted in many ways, but it doesn’t exclude technology.

In fact, there are numerous unexplained ancient “mysteries” that are usually attributed to alien visitations. The Nazca lines in Peru, Stonehenge, Easter Island, cave drawings in Africa resembling astronauts have all been a part of alien folklore. But could these be explained by the presence of an advanced civilization? Perhaps it could. If ancient man really did live for hundreds of years, as the Bible claims, imagine what he could accomplish.

Some scientists believe that the earth may have been protected from harmful radiation by a water vapor canopy which would explain why people lived much longer. It would also explain where all of that water came from. Indeed, this is exactly what the Bible describes as the waters above and below the earth. Add to this that some scientists believe that Venus passing close to earth may have caused cataclysmic geological upheavals resulting in a global flood and it could make for some pretty exciting film. Throw into that mix man’s wickedness toward each other instead of the environment and it could be even juicier. But we’ll never see that from liberal Hollywood because there is nothing new under the sun. “A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.” (Ecc 10:2)
