Bill O’Reilly had Kirsten Powers on his show recently to discuss her new book called The Silencing: How the Left is Killing Free Speech. I haven’t read the book yet. I am only speaking from what I heard in the interview. First of all I applaud Kirsten for standing up, speaking out and writing about what she believes in, even though she will be highly criticized by her very own peers. I seriously love her display of courage and I think she is setting a great example, even though I still disagree with her on many issues.
Let’s begin with the title of her book. It sounds like Kirsten believes that the Left is one of the primary killers of free speech. I strongly agree that their influence on the media definitely plays a party in destroying free speech. Most of the media is clearly made up of people on the left. The everyday American casually watches the news, commercials, televisions shows, etc. that pour the liberal perspective out to unknowing victims. When trying to have a conversation with a liberal, there is a lot of loud talking, and repetition of things they heard without any solid support for their arguments. They basically try to shout you down and really don’t want to listen to a word you say when you contradict their point of view. I suspect this is partially what Kirsten wrote about. She told Bill that we should be able to have honest debates and it isn’t happening anymore. I couldn’t agree with her more and I am looking forward to reading her book.
At this point Bill seems agreeable, but then the Pam Geller Mohammad cartoon controversy is brought up. Apparently, I missed Kirsten and Bill’s previous discussion about this, but now I hear that Kirsten and Bill are on opposite sides of this argument? Really Bill? This is a simple application of the principle of free speech. It is one of the foundational principles that America was built on. Bill goes on to say he agrees that we need to have free speech in America, but drawing cartoons of Mohammad is just not smart.
Of course, hopefully (fingers crossed) by now we all know that speaking up against Islam (the Religion of Peace) can result in death threats, need for security guards, “accidents”, planes flying into buildings, embassies being attacked, beheadings, law suits, broken windows, bombings, etc. We should all understand that speaking out against Islam is most definitely dangerous, but is it smart to stay silent about this religion? Laura Ingraham weighed in on this topic too and was in agreement with Bill! What?
What is going on here? Bill and Laura are both coddling the Muslims on this one and not standing firm on the principle of free speech. Why should we be scared to speak out or mock this religion that is responsible for so many innocents lives destroyed? Is this the fault of just the Left? I don’t think so. In my opinion this is merely another consequence of Biblically illiterate America and the fact we are not taught to thinking critically anymore.
Bill and Laura both blew it. They couldn’t or didn’t think this through. For example, I think this could be a great conversation starter to all those peaceful Muslims out there. Bill frequently states that there are “religious loons or fanatics” in every denomination. Not sure exactly what he means by a loon or fanatic. When I think of a fanatic, I think that is someone that knows his/her holy book well and acts it out. Well, the Quran encourages killing or maiming the infidel. An infidel is anyone who does not convert to Islam. Heck, Muslims even kill Muslims, that aren’t Muslim enough.
A fanatic Christian in any denomination, if following Gods commands, might talk you to death and cause you to run in the opposite direction when you see them coming, but they won’t kill you for drawing a cartoon of Jesus, making an offensive video or simply not converting. Modern fanatical Christians won’t kill you, modern fanatical Muslims will.
Muslims seem to be taking the prize lately with acting out their religion and recruiting. I believe that they must feel very confident about it or they wouldn’t back it up with actions. Some are acting out, while the others are watching and letting things happen, which is horrible too. I believe that Christians are so confused and most don’t even realize it and as a result not confident enough in the clear teachings of the Bible to stand up against Islam. I seriously believe that too many Christians don’t stand on Biblical authority. Standing firm with God gives us great courage and I am not seeing it in the general Christian population. Christians are not even discussing and debating amongst themselves. I applaud Pam and Kirsten for speaking up and I encourage everyone to pray for them.
