On June 23, 1972, the famous “Smoking Gun” conversation took place between President Richard Nixon and his Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, six days after the Watergate hotel break-in, where they discussed the tracing of the source of money found on the Watergate burglars. In the conversation, Haldeman proposed having the CIA ask the FBI to stop their investigation of the Watergate hotel break-in under the premise that the break-in was a national security operation. Nixon, in agreeing with the recommendation was perceived by the Watergate Special Prosecutor to have entered into a criminal conspiracy to obstruct justice. H.R. Haldeman eventually went to prison for eighteen months and President Nixon was ultimately forced to resign as his political support evaporated once this eight minute tape was made public.
Flash forward forty-three years, and once again we have a “Smoking Gun” moment which the Democrats are choosing to ignore. On October 22, 2015, during the Select Committee on Benghazi, emails from Hillary Clinton were produced which revealed beyond a shadow of a doubt that the former Secretary of State and current front-runner for the 2016 Democratic Presidential Ticket, had lied to the American people about the cause of the death of four Americans on September 11, 2012 at the Benghazi compound including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Mrs. Clinton initially claimed that the deaths were the result of an uprising that occurred as a result of a “senseless video”. And, she told this lie to the families of four dead Americans. However, during Mrs. Clinton’s testimony, House Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio produced an email which Mrs. Clinton sent on the evening of September 11 to her daughter Chelsea, which stated that, “Two of our officers were killed in Benghazi by an Al Queda-like [sic] group. “
Apparently, Mrs. Clinton also made a call the night of the attack to Mohammed Magariaf, who was then the President of Libya where she cited that an Al-Qaida affiliated group Ansar al-Sharia was “claiming responsibility” for the attack. Furthermore, during a phone call with the Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil the next day, Clinton said “we know the attack in Libya had nothing to do with the film. It was a planned attack, not a protest.”
Yet to the American people and the families of the four dead Americans, Mrs. Clinton along with President Barack Obama and National Security Advisor Susan Rice, continued to peddle the narrative that these four individuals were killed as a result of a spontaneous protest that occurred due to an “anti-Islam” internet video. In fact, when Mrs. Clinton greeted the families of the four victims on the tarmac, she swore that she would find the creators of the video and that they would be brought to justice. This video story was obviously concocted to hide the truth. After all, it was just before the November 2012 election. The last thing President Obama needed was the revelation that his administration had failed to protect its citizens against terrorists.
Furthermore, the “video” story was not Mrs. Clinton’s only Benghazi related perceived fabrication or evasion. When asked by House Representative Mike Pompeo (R-Utah) if Benghazi was a gun-running operation, she flat out denied the allegations. Mrs. Clinton was also particularly evasive when questioned about her relationship with Sidney Blumenthal, a former Bill Clinton administration advisor. When asked if Sidney Blumenthal was advising her regarding US relations with Libya and other matters, Mrs. Clinton only stated that he provided information which was sometimes helpful and sometimes not helpful. Yet. Sidney Blumenthal, who was denied a position at the State Department and had never visited Libya, was the author of the lion’s share of Mrs. Clinton’s email correspondence.
Mrs. Clinton’s testimony also revealed a coldness towards others which was “chilling” to witness. She expressed no reasonable explanation as to why she told the families of four dead Americans that their loved ones deaths were due to a video when she knew it was an act of terrorism. She also appeared cavalier when discussing the death of Ambassador Stevens. She claimed that he knew what he was getting into when he signed up for the position. She also expressed no contrition for the State Department’s failure to receive his 600 requests for help. During the testimony, she revealed that Stevens, who she referred to as a good friend, did not have her private email address and that she could not remember any conversation she had with him after he became ambassador to Libya. In fact, it was also revealed that when Ambassador Stevens sent her an email asking about whether the Benghazi compound should be closed, she thought he was joking. Furthermore, the night of his death, she composed an email with the subject line “Chris Smith”, confusing his name with that of Sean Smith, the diplomat who was killed in the Benghazi raid.
Yet despite being caught in a series of bold-faced lies and evasions, Hillary Clinton is perceived to have performed very well during the hearing. After all, she maintained her composure and didn’t lapse into the “What difference – at this point, what difference does it make?” theatrics of the January 23, 2013 Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing. The Democrats on the House Committee basically threw “softball questions” at Mrs. Clinton and accused the Republicans of trying to wear down the witness with the eleven hour hearing and “badgering questions”. Yet the Democrat voters appear to be satisfied with hearing’s outcome. They are happy that this “Benghazi” nightmare is yesterday’s news and Hillary is once again their golden girl candidate for the 2016 Presidency.
Perhaps they are celebrating too soon. Mrs. Clinton may have won the battle, but the war is far from over. Nixon was forced to resign from the presidency for attempting to cover up a campaign spying operation. Mrs. Clinton has the blood of four dead Americans on her hands. There will be a day of reckoning where she is asked to account for her lies and mistakes. And at that time the armies of Clinton sycophants will be nowhere to be found.
