When this man looked into the river and saw what was happening, he took immediate action. Would you have done the same thing?
A quick-thinking man is being hailed a hero after he jumped into a river, pried open a door to a sinking SUV and pulled an unconscious woman trapped inside to safety, officials said.
The dramatic rescue unfolded after the 50-year-old woman’s car jumped a curb in Nutley, New Jersey on Tuesday morning and plunged into about 10 feet of water in the Passaic River, police said.
Rescuer Jason Moss, 30, was leaving a local gym in Lyndhurst when the accident happened and heard a man screaming in the parking lot about a car in the river and for someone to call 911.
The IT sales manager drove across the bridge to Nutley, quickly changed out of his clothes and into gym shorts before jumping into the water after the woman, according to ABC News.
‘I just jumped into the water,’ Moss said. ‘I didn’t realize how shallow it was. I hit some rocks as I jumped down.’
Moss said he could see the unidentified woman floating unconscious as the vehicle filled with water and he tried to pull the door open, but it would not budge.
‘It was probably the scariest moment of my life,’ he said. ‘If I didn’t pull her out, she was dead.’
He eventually pried the door open, grabbed the woman and pulled her to safety just as emergency responders arrived.
