The San Francisco 49ers made it official Sunday night that coach Chip Kelly has been relieved of his duties — in addition to general manager Trent Baalke losing his job with the team.
…”Despite my feelings for Trent and Chip, I felt the decision to change our football leadership was absolutely necessary. The performance of this team has not lived up to my expectations or those of our fans, and that is truly disappointing. We all expected to see this team progress and develop as the season went on, but unfortunately that did not happen. That is why now is the time to find a new direction for this team.”
Hey, at least Colin did that one thing that matters, right? Excellence on the field and off?
Oh… Neither? OK, nevermind. If he’s been imagining himself this generation’s Jackie Robinson or MLK, his is very, very mistaken.
…Ironically it may have been Kelly’s desire to NOT be seen as a racist that sealed his doom. It was during his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles where a number of black players whined to the media that he ran the locker room like a plantation and treated non-whites like slaves.
Instead of taking immediate action by leveling fines and a suspension against Kaepernick – who was in uniform and on the job – for his public militancy, Kelly quietly encouraged it by failing to nip the problem in the bud. Now he has paid for it with his job.
…Not only was the 49ers season a dumpster fire but the league itself suffered a shocking decline in television ratings which many have attributed to Kaepernick’s alienation of droves of fans who decided that they had better things to do than spend their time watching weekly snits by racist malcontents.
It’s going to take a long time for the stench of the season to wear off but it’s unimaginable that the incoming coach and GM are going to want to stake their own futures on a troublemaker who can’t win games. — DownTrend
