Gun Control … Even BB Guns? – Really?

One of the most famous and iconic pieces of American movie masterpieces is the 1983 comedy A Christmas Story. Especially known for one of the most memorable quotes ever, when the main character asks Santa for a Red Ryder Carbine for Christmas. Santa responds, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” The movie taps into one of the fondest memories of many a young American – to actually be trusted with the awesome power of a BB gun as a Christmas gift. And not just any BB gun, a Red Ryder lever action carbine. Oh yeah, what’s better than that?
I recently found myself strolling the aisles of the evil retailer known as Wal-Mart. I stopped and stared at an entire end cap full of The Original Red Ryder BB guns. Images of my youth flashed through my head and my pulse quickened. I knew this was the perfect gift for my boys, ages 11 and 7. I noticed they’d even added a version with a pink stock for the girls! Anyway, my youngest daughter is too young.
