Church Invests In Broadway Musical About Aimee Semple McPherson And Loses $2 Million
Foursquare Church in Echo Park, Los Angeles, invested in a musical about their founder Aimee Semple McPherson called “Scandalous” and lost about $2 million according to some inside clergy members. The church foundation’s director was resigned soon after the show closed and the majority of the board members were replaced by the church after the substantial loss.
The ministry has gained such popularity in the past century that it even began its own denomination, has over 66,000 churches across the world, with 1,700 congregations in the United States. The musical was written by television personality Kathie Lee Gifford who went on to blame the failure of the show on Hurricane Sandy.
