Bill O’Reilly is on the Wrong Side of Lot’s Door: Bowing to ‘Big Alphabet’

homosexuality_divorce“Our society strives to avoid any possibility of offending anyone except God.” – Billy Graham

The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals. That’s where the compelling argument is. ‘We’re Americans; we just want to be treated like everybody else.’ That’s a compelling argument … And to deny that, you’ve got to have a very strong argument on the other side … And the other side hasn’t been able to do anything but thump the Bible.

– Bill O’Reilly, Fox News

Oh, I don’t know, Bill, pedophiles are Americans too; so are adulterers, fornicators, prostitutes, porn-stars, poly-amorists, dwarves that work with donkeys at bachelor parties, and employees that have to be paid off to keep their mouth shut about the tubby that you want to take with them.

Bill, or shall we refer to you as “Ted Baxter” from here on out and tip the hat to Rush Limbaugh. Yes, Ted, the Bible does make a compelling argument against sexual misbehavior as does 6,000 years of civilization, the other major faiths of the world, the CDC, the ex-gay community, common sense and even the foundational principles of evolution. As a matter of fact, you can make a pretty strong and “compelling” case against sexual anarchy and gay marriage without ever cracking a sacred text.

Bill O’Reilly and Fox News aren’t the only ones to skip aboard the glitter train as it approaches the Supreme Court. Actors, professors, journalists, conditioned sheeple and even the clergy are fighting to get in the conga line of capitulation. And while the immoral majority is poised to kick Lot’s door down, there are some “Christians” who would rather fling it open and roll out the rainbow carpet.

Now, I can understand the confusion of a child who has grown up in a broken home with no religious upbringing outside of the secular humanist CCD of the state school system; but I’ll never quite figure out those that have taken the Lord’s name in vain as they profess that Christianity and sexual anarchy are compatible. And it’s not just the Unitarian Universalists, Episcopalians, Methodists and Presbyterians; even some real “Christians”** have left the field of battle or have joined the other side.

Unlike the abortion battle, most “Christians” are choosing to sit this one out. It’s much easier to wear a tiny feet pin or put a “choose adoption” sticker on the back of the mini-van than it is to stand up to Hollywood, Washington, New York and Sodom. After all, who wants to be called a hate filled bigot?

When Christians choose cowardice they always have to couch it in self-righteous spirituality, as if they are somehow above the fray. They usually drop the “Gospel Card” and say that we should be solely about evangelism and that God didn’t send us to “judge” (see my last column: The Gospel Card). But recently I’ve noticed that some have adopted the “it’s just another sin” alibi. You know, like taking something home from the office or staring a few seconds too long at a Carl’s Jr. commercial is the immoral equivalent of something that God destroyed the cities of the plain over.

Have you ever been in a conversation about the threat of homosexuality only to be stopped by the other person, who admits that it’s a sin, only to take you to task for not being as passionate about “serving the poor?” – As if a Christian can’t chew gum, “cleave to righteousness” and “abhor that which is evil” at the same time. That’s right, the Holy Spirit just hasn’t given you enough spiritual fuel to both pass out blankets at the soup kitchen and stand for righteousness on the school board, in the voting booth or in the public square. God tells you to stand fast but your super-snarky spiritual betters tell you to stand down and be proud about it.

Recently Christian cowardice has taken a whole new form – a meme is making its rounds on the internet that shows two pictures and in the top picture is a throng of thousands of people with the caption – “People protesting gay marriage because it’s against traditional values.” In the bottom picture (a shot of an empty road with tumble weed blowing through) is the caption, “People protesting divorce because Jesus said it was wrong.”

The implication is that the Christian is a selectively offended hypocrite. The one that I’ve seen posted by a group that goes by the name “Stop Playing Church” goes on to state, “Divorce and Homosexuality. Is there truth in this picture? Why do you think homosexuality is highlighted more than other sins?”

After I threw up in my mouth a bit, I decided to take a stab at their question: Why do you think homosexuality is highlighted more than let’s say, divorce?

Maybe because divorce isn’t the greatest threat to religious freedom since the iron curtain! Perhaps, because divorce doesn’t hold pride parades, force itself into school curriculum, and threaten networks for not having enough “divorced” characters. Possibly, because divorce doesn’t boycott Chik-fil-a and Hobby Lobby for holding to Biblical values; and because divorce hasn’t bribed or water-boarded politicians until it receives special status in “Hate Speech” legislation. Perchance it’s because divorce isn’t suing a photographer, a baker, the owners of a bed and breakfast and a church for refusing service.

Is it me or does divorce have school clubs that promote the diversity and splendor of divorce? Does divorce have an awards ceremony? Does it have a legal arm that extorts and distorts? Does divorce actively threaten businesses for being out of compliance? How about this one in the voice of Eddie Izzard — “Does divorce have a flag?” And while I refuse to believe that we can’t stand aghast at what “no fault” divorce has done to this country and what bowing to the alphabet mafia will do to it, maybe, just maybe, Christians talk about the dangers of homosexuality more because divorce was actually permitted and instituted by God through Moses for the hardness of men’s hearts. Child, Please!

So, to the shiny-happy Christians who march quietly into that dark night and to the effervescent Biblical scholar and resident Fox News Spinhead – you’re in the wrong company to be living on your knees. You’re not only on the wrong side of history; you’re on the wrong side of Lot’s door.

** If your denomination has pretty much denied God and His Word, you can profess anything but you’re not confessing Christianity. The statement was meant to offend you out of the apathy of what you’ve settled for as truth. Tradition is only relevant when it has maintained its foundational integrity. Do you really believe that if Whitefield or the Wesleys were here today, they’d still be part of that denomination? – Right; and a pro-life, anti-communist like JFK would still be a Democrat.
