‘Climate Change’ Threatens Women — But Not the Muslim Brotherhood?

Congresswoman_Barbara_LeeHelp us, Al Gore!

First it melted all the ice. Then it killed all the polar bears. Now it’s going to cause women to become hookers or marry young? Damn you, Global Warming! Er, wait … climate change?

Either way, it’s happening. I know this because Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) said so. House Concurrent Resolution 36, introduced by Rep. Lee on April 26, recognizes

“…the disparate impact of climate change on women and the efforts of women globally to address climate change.”

Um. Ok.

But it goes further. Much further.

Whereas women will disproportionately face harmful impacts from climate change, particularly in poor and developing nations where women regularly assume increased responsibility for growing the family’s food and collecting water, fuel, and other resources;

Whereas epidemics, such as malaria, are expected to worsen and spread due to variations in climate, putting women and children without access to prevention and medical services at risk;

Whereas food insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health;

Wait, what? Food insecure women will turn to a life of transactional sex and *gasp* early marriage? I can see the whole prostitution thing putting women at risk for disease and unplanned pregnancy. (And, really, poor reproductive health goes without saying). I’m a bit stymied by the early marriage thing, though. I’d think that would save you from herpes, but what do I know?

The resolution goes on to refer to Hurricane Katrina as a “climate-related disaster,” using it to point out the devastating economic affect it had on single mothers in particular. It ends by asking President Obama to “ensure that those policies and programs support women globally to prepare for, build resilience for, and adapt to climate change.”

I didn’t realize until now how much unmitigated crap a person could fit into a six page document.

Not surprisingly, the resolution was referred to committee.

Also not surprising? That I couldn’t find a single resolution introduced by Representative Lee asking that the US sever ties with any nation that treats cattle better than women. It’s odd to me that a woman so concerned with helping women “adapt to climate change” wouldn’t be as equally concerned with allowing women the right to drive, to vote, to own property, or to be out without a male relative escorting them.

President Obama pledged $1.5 billion in aid to Egypt in January. In March of this year, Secretary John Kerry announced what would be the first payment, $250 million. Mere days later the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s ruling party, denounced the UN declaration, “End Violence against Women.”
