End of the World as We Know It: Husbands/Fathers Surviving ‘Bizarro World’

If you turn on any type of media today, you are immediately bombarded by an onslaught of bad news. A brittle economy, terrorists, civil unrest, corrupt politicians, out of control government spending, school shootings – up is down – down is up … It’s flippin’ Bizarro World outside your front door. What can a man do to make his family feel safe in the chaos that is 2013? I don’t have all the answers, but I feel like I might be able to share a few things that will at least give you a decent night’s sleep, other than having a loaded 12 gauge next to your bed.

I am a man of faith, so the first thing I’m going to share with you is just that — Get your family in church. I’m not going to get on a soapbox here, but the truth of the matter is that now, more than ever, we need God. Having a community of people that your family gathers with every week to pray and worship not only builds emotional stability in your family, but you grow closer to your friends, neighbors and most importantly the Creator of the universe.

I was a Boy Scout when I was a kid, so the second piece of advice I’m going to share with you is the Boy Scout motto — “Be Prepared”. Are you prepared in case of a major storm or some other disaster/ emergency happens? Does your family have a 3 day plan? I’m not telling you to go dig a hole in your backyard and stockpile weapons and food for some apocalyptic event. Tornadoes, floods, hurricanes and blizzards are a reality. With a little investment and time, you can have your family prepared. That preparedness brings peace of mind.

This third piece of advice is vital for any family — Spend time together. Watching TV for three hours every night is not spending quality time together. Get up and go to the park. Take your family on a hike through the woods. Get out that board game that’s been in the closet since Christmas ‘09.
