Look, Up in the Sky, It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane …! Obama Is Superman
Barack Obama "has authority to use drone strikes to kill Americans on US soil." – The Telegraph, 06 March, 2013
While I find it highly offensive to see Barack Obama portrayed as “the Pope” or “the Messiah” (and so would President Obama if he was a Christian); I do believe the comparison to Superman is accurate. Barack Obama is Superman.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Clark Kent was raised by communists or started his political career in a domestic terrorist’s living room; nor would I say that Barack Obama was born on the planet Krypton and believes in “truth, justice and the American way.”
The similarities between Barack Obama and the “Man of Steel” are not to be found in character or background, but in approach.
JUDGE, JURY AND EXECUTIONER
Superman sees the world with complete transparency, building his case without restraint, and closing it without jury or appeal. How fortunate we are that he’s a “beneficent despot.” Or is he? I guess we will just have to trust him. Bill of Rights? What rights? “We don’t need no stinking badges!”
You can take Superman out of Nietzsche but even his creators couldn’t take Nietzsche out of the “Man of Steel.” (See Part 1: "Ummasking Superman")
The same “conservatives” that gleefully chime “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” also gush over the new Superman movie with the excitement of a 14 year old girl with a Justin Bieber ticket. I’m pretty sure that Lord Acton would never sport a Superman poster in his dorm room.
The dichotomy of an otherwise thoughtful mind that embraces Acton’s warning about power when it appears in Lord of the Rings yet ignores it when it is slighted in Star Wars and Superman, may be the exception to the rule for conservatives. For liberals, it is the logical consequence of their fascist underpinnings.
The left fawns over Superman for the same reason they fawn over Stalin, Mao, Castro and Chavez – power lust. The left adores absolute power when they are the ones with power in the absolute.
While progressives cried incessantly over the paper cut to civil rights that was the Bush/Cheney administration; they simply yawn at the Texas Chainsaw Massacre that is Obama’s.
Obama whips out the NDAA and cranks up the Patriot Act to the level that would make the Stasi blush, and the dutiful press corps looks the other way. The “scandals” of the IRS tampering and targeting and the NSA and DOJ wiretapping receive some traction only because the AP was on the enemies list.
Running guns to the Contras to fight communism and to free Americans was the end of the world but running guns to Mexico to destroy the 2nd Amendment or to Syria to aid the caliphate revolution - just peachy; “nothing to see here.” And this too is seen in the myth of the Superman. There is very little that separates the “means” of Lex Luthor and Clark Kent but the perceived “ends” that justify them.
People don’t mind that Clark Kent has super power and isn’t afraid to wield it, whether or not it’s in line with American values, because he’s wearing “the white hat,” but if Luthor tries to peer through walls, spy from the sky or listen to your conversations, it’s the perceived death of humanity – a businessman’s greed being the most dangerous thing in the universe.
This is why artists have portrayed Obama as Superman. This is why the left decries force when they are out of power yet wield it like the harvester of sorrow’s scythe when they wrest hold of it. This is why Ron Silver smiled after first scowling at the military flyover in the first Clinton inaugural – “they are our planes now!”
Ever notice the strange make-up of those who sport the Superman symbol as a tattoo? From Shaq to Bon Jovi, from the comic geek to the emo chick, from the bodybuilder to the gang-banging triple homicide on death row -- no shrink in existence would tell you that these people are attracted to a vanilla boy-scout from another galaxy that humbly stands for truth, justice and the American way.
They are attracted to power – sheer and unadulterated, dominating power. And Metropolis Nation is a “might makes right” kind of world.
Faster than a speeding drone; able to leap tall scandals in a single bound -- he hears all, he sees all, manipulating the press, receiving an adoring public, he is the Man of Steel. Barack Obama drones and wiretaps, he has a marionette relationship with newspapers and television and he crushes his “enemies” with brute force and a smile; all the while posing in front of an American flag. Forget buying gold folks; buy lead! Buy kryptonite!
So what is kryptonite to a tyrant? -- The courage to tell the truth and keep telling it, come what may! Joe Wilson was right; he’s a “liar,” he’s a damned liar, but why was there only one voice singing it when there should have been a congressional choir?
The tea-party, the pulpit, the blog, the Facebook page – let’s teach the free world to sing in perfect harmony – “the emperor has no cape!” Don’t allow evil to shout you down! Make your stand! Tyrants attack what they fear most and this “man of steel” is targeting those who believe that we have a right to live free!
Most of all don’t come when the Iron Shepherd calls; refuse the command to “heel, “stay” or ultimately “play dead,” for we are of a different flock.
If there is to be a rebirth of freedom in this country, it’s time to close the casket on absolute power and declare: “Superman is dead! Superman remains dead. And we have killed him. Yet his shadow still looms!”
