Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

Recently on Clashdaily I wrote about the twitter abuse I received from a horde of Atheists that seemed to take issue with my quoting “There are no Atheists in foxholes.”  That statement itself is based off of the premise that when “it” hits the fan, we all have faith in something! This is a great segue into today’s topic, the question of “Why do bad things happen to good people?”

As Christians, there is no greater test to ones faith than the evil encountered in this world on a daily basis. Every day we read the news headlines, “man shot and killed over a pair of sneakers”, “woman raped by a released repeat felon”, “90 year old woman robbed and beaten up at gun point by thugs”, and on and on it goes.

Some people argue that without evil there can be no good, they say that one cannot exist without the other. I don’t know how I feel about that statement, personally I think that I would be just fine without any evil in the world. What do you think?

Throughout my life I have asked myself the question, “If there really is a God out there, then why does he allow these terrible things to happen to good people?”  I’m certain that this is a question that many individuals of faith have faced in their lifetimes. I imagine that even individuals like Doug Giles and Steve Pauwels have pondered similar questions at some point! These are not only men of faith, but Pastors of the faith and I would bet that at some point in their lives they too have wondered about the very same thing!

As journalists they have to write and cover heinous topics on a daily basis, I can’t imagine that they haven’t asked themselves this question at one point or another. We are all human after all. Doug Giles even has a book out called If You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going! The title itself implies what I am saying here, your faith may often be tested and though the world may seem to be against you, you still have to keep the faith and keep going!
