POT, MEET KETTLE! Playing Obama’s History Game: Democrats Should Be Quiet About Almost Everything

President Obama may want to sit out the last National Prayer Breakfast of his administration next year. Bad things seem to happen when he shows up. Last year he had to suffer the indignity of sitting at the dais while Dr. Ben Carson eviscerated his Obamacare plan and exposed it as the wasteful Rube Goldberg that it is. This year the breakfast came on the heels of the nauseating immolation of a Jordanian pilot at the hands of ISIS. How did the leader of the free world choose to address this atrocity committed by Islamic militants? By condemning Christianity, of course!

In a speech that had jaws dropping across the land, Obama used the kind of contorted logic that has become the trademark of his administration. Because Christians of more than eight centuries ago committed acts of barbarism during the Crusades, the theory went, the Christians of the 21st century are in no position to judge the atrocities against humanity being committed routinely in the name of Islam right now. Never one to miss an opportunity to inject race into the discussion, Obama also suggested that slavery and Jim Crow laws were carried out in the name of Jesus Christ.

Put aside the absurdity of those claims for a moment. Never mind that Christianity has had several reforms since then, and that the United States paid dearly for slavery with the bloodiest war in its history. Such logic could be used for devastating effect against the party of Obama, Pelosi and Sharpton.

Historians have documented the ways that the Ku Klux Klan was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party in the South in the 1860s. In his book A Short History of Reconstruction, the widely respected Dr. Eric Foner details how the guiding principle of the Klan after its founding was to terrorize both black and white Republicans. Nathan Bedford Forrest III, grandson of one of the Klan’s founders of the same name, wrote in the September 1928 issue of the Klan’s Kourier Magazine:

I have never voted for any man who was not a regular Democrat. My father … never voted for any man who was not a Democrat. My grandfather was …the head of the Ku Klux Klan in reconstruction days…. My great-grandfather was a life-long Democrat…. My great-great-grandfather was…one of the founders of the Democratic party.

By Obama’s logic, no Democrat in 2015 has the right to lecture the rest of us on matters of race ever again. Think of what a happier place that would be.

On February 19, 1942, Democrat icon and then-President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the deportation and incarceration of more than 110,000 Japanese Americans in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack. Many internees had their property destroyed. Some died from insufficient medical care. Thousands of law-abiding people had their basic civil liberties grossly violated and their dreams of a better life shattered.

By Obama’s logic, no Democrat in 2015 should sit on a “high horse” and criticize anyone else for supporting the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, profiling terror suspects or deporting those who enter the country illegally.

We could play this game ad infinitum. If a less-than-immaculate past precludes a group from ever calling out treachery when it occurs in the present day, then none of us should ever comment on anything again.

If America has been the guiding light of the world, it attained that status in part because it has risen above the sometimes shameful episodes in history. We have been blessed with the Constitution, one of the most enlightened documents man has ever produced, and we have strived to live by its principles. That the current chief executive has such a pronounced case of historical myopia explains a lot about our nation’s current malaise and fading superpower status on his watch.

George Hewes

"George Hewes" is the nom de plume of a freedom-loving American who believes the runaway growth of government is trampling on our individual liberties. He advocates a return to constitutional principles as a cure for what ails America as well as a vigorous response to the relentless forces of progressivism and Big Government.
