1. “Dumb War”

While running for Illinois Senator in 2002, candidate Obama called the U.S. mission in Iraq a “dumb war.”

“I don’t oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war,” Obama said. He did, however, characterize former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. “Now, let me be clear – I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein,” Obama said in a speech.

2. Opposed the “Surge” in Iraq

In a speech before Congress opposing then-President George W. Bush’s “surge” plan, Senator Obama was decidedly opposed. “I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the sectarian violence there. In fact, I think it will do the reverse. I think it takes pressure off the Iraqis to arrive at the sort of political accommodation that every observer believes is the ultimate solution to the problems we face there. So I am going to actively oppose the president’s proposal. … I think he is wrong, and I think the American people believe he’s wrong.”

3. Withdraw All Troops by End of March 2008

While he was a Senator and after having visited Iraq, Barack Obama published an article in Foreign Affairs in July 2007 in which he pushed for withdrawing all troops as soon as feasible. Senator Obama wrote the war was one “that never should have been authorized and never should have been waged.” Obama advocated troop withdrawal “with the goal of removing all combat brigades from Iraq by March 31, 2008.”

4. “Take That to the Bank”

In Fall of 2007, when he was on the presidential campaign trail, Senator Obama made a promise. “If we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am President, it is the first thing I will do. I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war. You can take that to the bank.”

5. Obama Becomes President

After Barack Obama takes his Oath of Office, he states, “We’ll begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people.”
