A THREAT TO EVERYONE: Islamist Groups from Around the World

Islamists can be found all over the world. Whether it be terrorist organizations, Islamic states, or Sharia-advocating groups, Islamic Fundamentalism is a growing threat to the safety and security of everyone on the globe. In this article, I will focus on the terrorist organizations.

ISIS:(a.k.a. ISIL, a.k.a. the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a.k.a. the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham, a.k.a. the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.) Established in 1999 (and undergoing several name changes, as well as reorganization), this Islamist group has pledged its loyalty to Al-Qaeda and went into action after Saddam Hussein’s regime was toppled, forming the bulk of the insurgency. They have taken advantage of America’s pullout from Iraq, as well as the Syrian Civil War. Their main goal is the establishment of an Islamic nation consisting of both Iraq and Syria, although they have also made their presence known in Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, and Afghanistan.

Al-Qaeda (a.k.a. al qaida): Formed by Osama Bin Laden (and several other Islamists) in the late 1980s (during which the Soviets were pulling out of Afghanistan), its goal is eliminating Western presence (i.e. military presence) in the Muslim world. After the United States and its allies established a military presence in Saudi Arabia in order to drive the Iraqis out of Kuwait, Al Qaeda turned its attention to America, committing several acts of terrorism during the 1990s, the attack on the U.S.S. Cole in 2000, and its attacks on American soil on September 11, 2001. Operation Enduring Freedom (including the death of Bin Laden) dealt a series of devastating blows to Al Qaeda, but it continues to remain active.

The Taliban: Established during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, this group came to power in 1996 amidst the Afghan Civil War, and thus set up an Islamic state there. The Taliban became allied with Al-Qaeda during the late 1990s, and hence became targeted by the West following 9/11. Driven from power in December 2001, it seeks to retake Afghanistan. Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is its main supporter.

Boko Haram: Founded in 2002, this organization began it campaign of terror in 2009. Based in the northeastern provinces of Nigeria, its goal is to make Nigeria an Islamic state. Recently, it has expanded into Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. It has also pledged its loyalty to ISIS. And since ISIS has expanded into Libya and Egypt, could the two organizations be trying to link up (and possibly expand throughout Africa)?

Hamas: Formed in 1988, this organization seeks to carve an Islamic state consisting of Israel, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. In 2006, it became the dominant group within the Palestinian Authority’s government. It later took control of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Hezbollah (a.k.a. Hizbollah): Formed in 1982 during the Lebanese Civil War, this group also seeks to replace Israel with an Islamic Palestine. Primarily based in Lebanon, it receives support from Syria and Iran. In recent years, its members were discovered to be sneaking into the United States via Mexico.

These are just a few of the many Islamist organizations. You can find a complete list of them at http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/viewGroups.asp?catid=16.

Needless to say, they must be defeated. Otherwise, no one on Earth is safe.
