Donald Trump has unleashed the latest in a series of stinging rebukes to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg following her unprecedented open criticism – demanding that she step down from the bench and saying ‘her mind is shot.’
Ginsburg, Trump tweeted after midnight, ‘has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot – resign!’
Trump was continuing an aggressive response to Ginsburg on Tuesday; he had already written that he hoped she soon leaves the bench for good, after she renewed her open-warfare attack on the Republican she regards as ‘a faker.’
But pointedly calling on her to retire from the nation’s highest court over her partisan barbs has pushed the pair’s feud to anew level and put Democrats on defense as they scramble to avoid defending her.
‘I can’t imagine what this place would be – I can’t imagine what the country would be – with Donald Trump as our president,’ Ginsburg told The New York Times over the weekend.
‘For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be – I don’t even want to contemplate that.’
Earlier on Tuesday Trump shoved back – hard – telling the Times that ‘it’s highly inappropriate that a United States Supreme Court judge gets involved in a political campaign, frankly. I think it’s a disgrace to the court and I think she should apologize to the court. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it.’
