Rescuers Spot Live Baby In Flood Waters — What It Was Clinging To Is Gutwrenching

Written by K. Walker on August 30, 2017

Hurricane Harvey has caused so much damage but the most devastating are the deaths that have occurred. This one is truly heartbreaking.

The death toll currently stands at 30.

The desperation of a mother to protect her child had a high cost.

The unidentified woman and her daughter were caught in a car in the rising flood water. The car stalled and she managed to get herself and her daughter out of the car.

They were swept away by the current into a drainage canal.

Rescuers spotted the mother floating with the child clinging to her and pulled them into the boat.

That was when they learned the devastating truth.

A police statement said the Beaumont woman pulled her vehicle into a theater parking lot about 3:35 p.m. Tuesday, when it got stalled in high water. The woman then took her daughter out of the car — before they were swept about a half-mile away into a rain-swollen drainage canal.

Two Beaumont police officers and two fire-rescue divers in a rubber boat spotted the mother floating with the child, who was holding onto her mother. Officers pulled the child and the mother into the boat.

The child was responsive but suffering from hypothermia. The mother was unresponsive and efforts to revive her failed. The child was hospitalized in stable condition.

That is just devastating.

This mother was trying to keep her child safe and lost her life doing just that.

What a tragedy.

We extend our thoughts and prayers to that child and her extended family.

There has been so much loss and devastation.

As Americans, we step up and help each other.

It’s what we do, and it’s part of what makes the United States the greatest country on Earth.
