We’ll call this “ruminations” …
Philadelphia…the city of brotherly love (that makes me wonder nowadays), a sanctuary city that says it won’t cooperate with the Federal authorities about illegal aliens, home to the Liberty Bell and, let’s not forget Rocky Balboa and the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Along with everything else, now and again it produces something odd…and that’s our first topic.
The Philadelphia Enquirer had a piece in it, back in December of last year (2017) all about one Willie Singletary, who used to be a traffic court judge, and who now wants to be in the US House of Representatives, taking the seat from Robert Brady. So far, so good…right? Here’s the hook on that…In 2013, he was caught up in a ticket-fixing scandal that prosecutors at the time said benefited only Philly’s rich and powerful and cost the city and state hundreds of thousands in unpaid fines. The judge was later declared not guilty of the charges, but he was convicted of lying to federal authorities during the investigation. He served 20 months in prison for the conviction, ending his sentence in 2016. The scandal led voters to abolish the city’s traffic court in a 2016 ballot measure that moved traffic violations into the Municipal Court. Despite his rather sketchy past, he insists that he’d make a good Congressman.
Switching gears, is it any surprise to anyone that the “mainstream media” is rather left-leaning in their reporting. Objectivity, it would appear, has been thrown out in favor of ratings. The truth, as one Senator Hiram Warren Johnson, was supposed to have said in 1918, was the first casualty of war. We may not be at war IN the United States (and I have my reservations about that) but certainly the media has been at war with Donald Trump. From the day he rode down the escalator and said he was going to run, the media has been chumming the waters (fishermen will understand that) and hoping for blood in the water.
So, here comes Michael Goodwin, a long-time journalist who actually deserves that title, and he had some interesting things to say. As an example he doesn’t believe that government is the answer to every problem. On the other hand, he has been known to write sympathetic coverage of groups like BLM and the Occupy Wall Street people. The alphabet networks quickly discovered that coverage of Trump, as he proceeded, inexorably, to the White House, was good for their ratings. It was a natural pivot to cover Trump and somewhere along the line they also discovered that the public would accept undocumented reporting, now called fake news. Ironically, the networks finally realized that their 24/7 coverage of Trump, regardless of what they said, only made him more popular. Mr. Goodwin, in an address in Atlanta in April of 2017 said day in, day out, in every media market in America, Trump was savaged like no other candidate in memory. We were watching the total collapse of standards, with fairness and balance tossed overboard. Every story was an opinion masquerading as news, and every opinion ran in the same direction—toward Clinton and away from Trump.” The rest is history.
Is there anyone that’s reading this that does not know who Kate Steinle was? Without going all through the events, suffice it to say that she was murdered…the murderer was an illegal alien. The hook in this story is that it took place in San Francisco, a sanctuary city. The murderer was found not guilty, which infuriated a lot of people, including me.
The one charge that stuck on the murderer was guilty of possessing a firearm as a felon. Even with the lesser charge instead of a murder charge, he still wasn’t satisfied. His attorney is asking for the court to reverse itself and drop that charge as well. In a sanctuary city it is entirely possible that a person CAN get away with murder.
Sticking with the subject of murder…what about the cold-blooded murder of an unarmed woman, in her pajamas, by a Somali policeman, in Minneapolis way back in the summer of ’17. There hasn’t been one word in any of the Minnesota papers and the Hennepin County District Attorney never answers anyone about it. There’s a very good chance the policeman will NEVER be charged in that murder.
This past November in New York an illegal alien committed murder. Esdras Marroquin Gomez was charged with the murder of a socialite at her 300-acre estate, Windswept Farm, in Westchester County. Gomez had been deported scheduled to go back to Guatemala, but U.S. law enforcement stopped Gomez in Miami, arresting and charging him with the murder. Do you see a pattern emerging here? If the illegals are stopped AT the border, and deported, these murders probably would not have taken place. So, in my not-so-humble opinion, we need to get the wall up as quickly as possible. Trump, in his first year, has had an effect on border-crossings, but we need to do more. Prevention is the way to go with this problem, I believe.
Parting shot:A It will never happen, of course, but when a person registers as a Democrat they should be issued a box of crayons, a coloring book and their choice of a puppy, a kitten, or a stuffed animal.
Snowflakes and buttercups should not have to face the world without these items.
