Parkland Officer Explains Why He Was A Coward On That Fateful Day

The man that has come to be known as the ‘Coward of Broward’ speaks out. Here’s what he had to say…

Scot Peterson, the School Resource Officer for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida had been given the nickname the ‘Coward of Broward’ for not immediately entering the building and ending the horrific shooting that killed 17 people. He was roundly condemned for failing to act as he was armed and on site.

Watch the surveillance footage of Peterson’s actions:

Peterson is now breaking his silence and giving his side of the story to NBC’s Savannah Guthrie.

GUTHRIE: Would you acknowledge that in this really important moment, you missed it?

PETERSON: I live with that, how could I not?

Peterson also said, ‘I’m human. If I would’ve known, knowing what I know today. I would’ve been in that building in a heartbeat. It’s my kids.

Guthrie pressed Peterson on what information he was given and where he thought the shots were coming from.

Watch:

He said that he walked to a spot on campus that would give him a vantage point of multiple buildings because he believed that a sniper was firing outside.

Peterson explained that it was difficult to hear because the building is hurricane-proof.

He also said that there was a breakdown in communication because the emergency calls coming from the school were being rerouted to the town next to Parkland instead of to the sheriff’s office. The dispatcher had little information.

GUTHRIE: So your dispatcher, nobody’s giving you any information?

PETERSON: No intel. No real-time intelligence whatsoever.

Guthrie then pressed Peterson on why he never entered the building.

Peterson said that he believed that he was doing his duty because he had been trained to ‘contain the area’. He added, ‘Things went so fast. I never had a chance.

Some Parkland parents aren’t buying it.

Fred Guttenberg’s daughter was killed that day.

This past weekend was the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Graduation. There were 4 students that received their diplomas posthumously: Joaquin Oliver, Meadow Pollack, Carmen Schentrup, and Nicholas Dworet.
