Open Season on White People—The New Politics of Racism

The big scandal last week was that New York Times editorial board member Sarah Jeong tweeted “cancel white people,” “white men are bullshit,” and “dumbass f—ing white people,” and bragged that she enjoys “being cruel to old white men.” Political commentator Bill O’Reilly says Jeong’s tweets are consistent with the Times’ editorial philosophy that “white men have destroyed the country.” It comes as no surprise to anyone who has been watching current social trends. Today’s caucasians, especially males, are being demonized and marginalized by the Left and its media enablers.

The Left, says author Ben Shapiro, wants to portray America as “an incurable mass of bigoted whites.” One of the racist arguments advocated by the Left is “white privilege,” the notion that society bestows unfair advantages to all people identified as white. For this reason, Democrats have justified open borders as a means of diminishing the percentage of the U.S. population that is white. A surprising number of white apologists support this nonsense.

Author David Horowitz is appalled by blatant anti-white racism. “The fact that white people are better off is not a privilege,” he says. “It’s earned.” White men founded our republic, white men ended slavery, and white men are largely responsible for the day-to-day commerce that puts food on the table and clothing on our backs. America runs because of white people and their value system. Like it or not, white people drive the engine that makes this country work.

In contrast, teenagers in the black subculture abhor the very idea of adopting white values. The worst insult for these kids is to be called “whitey” or “Uncle Tom.” This self-destructive behavior—not white privilege—is ruining the lives of millions of African-American kids. Their value system is marked by anger, violence, and refusal to accept personal responsibility. It is reinforced by political correctness, which bashes white people and white values at every opportunity.

More and more people have figured out that the old excuses for black crime and violence—jobs, poverty, schooling, etc.—are no longer valid. “Now they have a new excuse,” says Colin Flaherty in Don’t Make the Black Kids Angry. “The ultimate excuse: White racism is everywhere. White racism is permanent. White racism explains everything.” Blaming the problems of the black community on white racism is false, as African-American author Shelby Steele has pointed out. “The oppression of black Americans is over with,” Steele recently explained on Fox News’ Life, Liberty and Levin. “White institutional racism has disappeared from our society,” agrees author Scott Greer in No Campus for White Men.

Anti-white sentiment is especially virulent in colleges and universities. Identity politics on campus, says Scott Greer, is “increasingly bordering on outright hatred for white people, especially white men.” Bashing white people is acceptable to the Left, adds Ben Shapiro, because they believe that racism can only come from dominant groups. Only whites can be bigots. Non-white people cannot be bigots. So if Sarah Jeong attacks white people, the Left claims it is not actually racism.

Anti-white attacks are an offshoot of the Left’s preoccupation with its perverted version of “diversity,” where Americans are divided between oppressors—heterosexual, white, Christian males—and victimized groups of minorities and women. Minority groups are said to need protection because they are oppressed by the white majority. This is the victimhood culture of today’s college campus, says Scott Greer, where whites are morally inferior and blacks are superior because of their presumed history of oppression. “It is the old Marxist wine in new bottles,” says David Horowitz in Big Agenda, “and the results are bound to be similar.”

Instead of making everyone feel they are part of a unified American social structure, diversity plays into the leftist strategy of “divide and conquer.” With its emphasis on diversity, says Mark Levin in Ameritopia, the Left achieves the “balkanization” of society. Its version of diversity means the opposite of the traditional motto of the United States, “e pluribus unum.” Out of many, one. Wherever you came from, whatever you were, you are American now. The Left wants it to read, “Out of one, many.” For the Left, the whole purpose of diversity is division. For the rest of us, “It has not been our diversity,” said African-American author Thomas Sowell, “but our ability to overcome the problems inherent in diversity, and to act together as Americans, that has been our strength.”

White America has been mostly passive about the blitz of anti-white rhetoric—perhaps because of white guilt, perhaps because of fear of violent reprisals, perhaps because so many people are uninformed. At the same time, “More whites have begun talking about themselves as a racially oppressed majority,” reports CNN. “In a widely publicized 2011 survey, white Americans said they suffer from racial discrimination more than blacks.” It is time to declare that white people are victimized by racism and ought to be designated as a special class. Someone should explain to “people of color” that white is a color too.
