European Court Declares Disparaging Islam Is An Official ‘No-No’ – Bye, Bye Free Speech

The very continent that gave the world its modern notions of free speech and the right to free political discourse is now turning its back on that tradition.

Ironically, it happened at around the same time that someone tried to steal the Magna Carta.

Why would someone want to steal it? It’s not as though anyone over there is still using it. While someone was doing that, Europe was busy codifying Islamic blasphemy laws into their legal system.

Church and state? Separated.

Mosque and state? That’s a whole other story.

Naturally, it was a ‘Human Rights’ court in Europe that handed down this inane decision, as one European blogger noted here:

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that defaming the Prophet Muhammad “goes beyond the permissible limits of an objective debate”, upholding an earlier conviction by an Austrian court on the grounds it “served the legitimate aim of preserving religious peace in Austria”.

The ECHR found that a 47-year-old woman from Vienna had not had her right to freedom of expression impinged and added that domestic courts had been correct to convict her for “disparaging religious doctrines” as her comments “could stir up prejudice and threaten religious peace”.

According to the ECHR, the woman held two seminars in 2009 “in which she discussed the marriage between the Prophet Muhammad and a six-year-old girl, Aisha, which allegedly was consummated when she was nine. Inter alia, the applicant stated that Muhammad ‘liked to do it with children’ and ‘… A 56-year-old and a six-year-old? … What do we call it, if it is not paedophilia?’”

Dave Rubin made an interesting observation:

Ireland, as we speak, is preparing for a vote on whether to take ancient Blasphemy Laws off the books, because they are seen by critics as backward in a modern secular nation that recently reversed their prohibition on abortion.

At the very same time, Europe is INTRODUCING blasphemy laws with respect to Islam.

For anyone thinking that blasphemy laws only exist to make sure people don’t say mean things to Muslims, let’s not forget what their blasphemy laws have done elsewhere.

In Indonesia, one Christian candidate for office made the innocuous statement that it is ‘OK’ for a Muslim to vote for a Christian if he wants to.

He won his electoral race. He became governor. He was charged with blasphemy.

Jakarta’s Christian governor has been sentenced to two years in jail for blasphemy, a harsher-than-expected ruling critics fear will embolden hardline Islamist forces to challenge secularism in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.

This is the very same Indonesia that Obama held up as a model of tolerance in an official speech:

He also praised Indonesia – the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation – for a “spirit of tolerance that is written into your constitution, symbolized in your mosques and churches and temples, and embodied in your people,” a quality worthy for all the world to emulate.

How long do you suppose it will be before Europe discovers they made a Faustian deal?

And, more importantly, will America learn from their errors before we repeat them?
