SNL might have actually learned something from the outrage surrounding Pete Davidson mocking a Congressional candidate last weekend.
Ariana Grande’s former fiancé had mocked Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw last weekend for his eyepatch, which he wears after surviving an IED blast. Davidson said that Crenshaw looked like a ‘hitman from a porno movie’ and then said, ‘I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.’ It sparked bipartisan outrage for picking on a war-injured veteran.
Crenshaw was adamant that he didn’t need an apology from Saturday Night Live but instead called for courtesy and a call to not have politics invade our entertainment spaces. He handled it with class right from the start. The attention he received after being mocked on SNL by Davidson gave Crenshaw a nice little boost right before the midterm election.
SNL did reach out to Crenshaw to apologize, and they went even further — they had him appear on the show to address the issue and allowed him a few moments to speak.
U.S. Rep.-elect Dan Crenshaw appeared on “Saturday Night Live” to get some revenge and shake hands following last week’s episode in which a cast member mocked his war injury.
Criticism was swift after Pete Davidson joked that some people might be surprised that Crenshaw, 34, a U.S. Navy veteran, was “not a hitman in a porno movie,” alluding to the eyepatch that Crenshaw wears since losing his right eye during a 2012 deployment to Afghanistan.
Republicans and veterans groups quickly condemned the joke, with Crenshaw saying: “What passes for humor these days is not what used to pass for humor and that’s the big tragedy in all of this.”
Days after the show, the Texas Republican was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
This week, Crenshaw joined Davidson onstage in New York City to put the incident behind them.

DAVIDSON: In what I’m sure was a huge shock for people who know me, I made a poor choice last week. Nah, I did. I made a joke about Lieutenant Commander Dan Crenshaw, and on behalf of the show and myself, I apologize.
My poor mom. Can you imagine being my mom? Can you imagine being Pete Davidson’s mom? It can’t be easy when everyone’s mad at your son and roommate.
I mean this from the bottom of my heart. It was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero and he deserves all of the respect in the world. And if any good came of this, maybe it was that for one day the left and the right finally came together to agree on something: that I’m a d—.
At that moment, Crenshaw appeared on the show and said, ‘You think?‘
When Davidson said, ‘Thanks for coming,’ Crenshaw responded, ‘Thanks for making a Republican look good.‘
Davidson then explained how the wounded veteran was injured on his third tour and apologized to Crenshaw on camera. He then offered Crenshaw the opportunity to do the same comedy bit with a photo of him.
Crenshaw was actually pretty funny, but it was the moment at the end that was what America needs right now — Crenshaw took a moment to speak about finding unity and a little bit about veterans and heroes.
CRENSHAW: There’s a lot of lessons to learn here. Not just that the left and right can still agree on some things. But also, this: Americans can forgive one another. We can remember what brings us together as a country and still see the good in each other. This is Veteran’s Day weekend, which means that it’s a good time for every American to connect with a veteran. Maybe say, ‘Thanks for your service’ but I would actually encourage you to say something else. Tell a veteran, ‘Never Forget.’ When you say ‘Never Forget’ to a veteran, you are implying that, as an American, you are in it with them; not separated by some imaginary barrier between civilians and veterans but connected together as grateful, fellow Americans, who will never forget the sacrifices made by veterans past and present. And never forget those we lost on 9/11, heroes like Pete’s father. So, I’ll just say, ‘Pete, Never Forget.’
DAVIDSON: Never Forget.
The pair then shake hands. It was a beautiful moment of unity.

Kudos to Pete Davidson for admitting he was wrong, good-naturedly taking a couple of jokes at his expense and being willing to reconcile.
Lt. Com. Dan Crenshaw was the hero once again. His response to the entire situation was classy from beginning to end. His message about civility and his reconciliation with Davidson is exactly what Americans need to hear right now. It’s great that a man like that is going to be in Congress. And at just 34 years of age, he could have a long future ahead of him.
