The Radical Reinvention Of Sinead O’Connor
Sinead O’Connor, an Irish musician who is best known for tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a performance on Saturday Night Live in 1992 as part of her protest against the Roman Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion, during which she shouted “fight the true evil!” (which in turn resulted in NBC being flooded with a series of complaints). She was also ordained as a priest by Bishop Michael Cox of the Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church (an independent Catholic group not in communion with the Roman Catholic Church) in the late 1990s.
Needless to say, she is your typical liberal celebrity. Her causes include women’s rights, pacifism, and support for the unification of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
She describes herself as a dyke, but appears to be bisexual since she has been married four times, and had four children from her various husbands and boyfriends. So her sexuality is still up in the air.
She has also expressed mixed views on Catholicism, and religion in general, but considered herself a Christian.
Her religious affiliation has now changed.
Last year, she made an unsuccessful attempt to persuade Pope Francis to excommunicate her, something which she tried before with Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Meanwhile, she changed her name to Magda Davitt.
This year, she converted to Islam, and changed her name again, this time being Shuhada Davitt. She would later change her last name to Sadaqat.
After converting to Islam, she stated that she hates all white people, even going so far as to declare them to be disgusting.
I’m not sure how being Muslim makes you non-white, particularly since she herself is white, and that Islam is not a race.
Did liberalism lead to such views and actions, or was it a result of her state of mind?
I should point out that converting to Islam will conflict with her past feminist views, given how women are treated in the Muslim world (e.g. child marriages, forced marriages, physical abuse, honor killings, being forced to wear the veil). Did she bother to look into the lives of Muslim women before converting? And given the significant amount of Muslims across the globe who support jihad, her conversion to Islam would also conflict with her pacifist views.
And why Islam? There are many other denominations she could have converted to if she didn’t want to be a Catholic.
And why didn’t she stay in the church of which she been ordained as a priest?
I think Dr. Phil should have her on his show.
