After taking a beating for his mishandling of the sex scandals among Catholic Bishops, Pope Francis is stirring up a different kind of controversy with his statements about the clergy.
It’s a statement about homosexual priests.
The pontiff stated unequivocally that homosexual men should not be admitted into the Catholic clergy and gay priests should practice celibacy or leave the church, saying “there’s no room for that kind of affection” in priestly life.
In a book-length interview with Fernando Prado, a Spanish priest, released in Italy on Saturday, Francis describes homosexuality as “fashionable,” adding “that mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church,” according to The Guardian.
The pope says he “worries” of the “serious matter” of homosexuality in the priesthood, warning gay clergy to be “impeccably responsible” by remaining committed to living in “celibacy with integrity.”

If you’re gay, your options are celibacy or leaving the Priesthood.
Is that particularly controversial in a church that doesn’t even let its heterosexual priests take a wife?
The usual suspects will likely protest about how homophobic it is.
But this statement is hardly a break from tradition. A quick flip through the ‘Pastoral Epistles’ will show the moral standards expected of Christian leadership in the church. Sexual sin is one of several disqualifiers for leadership.
Full stop.
If you don’t like that? Do yourself a favor and choose some other career path.
