In case you missed it, Jussie Smollett just had a really, REALLY bad day.
The Empire actor and singer who allegedly orchestrated a fake racist and homophobic attack on himself is getting the book thrown at him. Smollett was originally charged with just one felony count of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report but the Cook County Grand Jury has ramped that up to 16 felonies. The Grand Jury has leveled two sets of charges, one for each set of lies that Smollett allegedly told to police.
The first set of charges are related to the initial report to police made by Smollett with the claims that the attackers yelled racial and homophobic slurs, said that they said, ‘This is MAGA country’, hit him with their hands, put a noose around his neck, and poured what he thought was bleach on him. The second set of charges relates to a follow-up interview that Smollett had with a different pair of police officers where he included details that he was attacked from behind and when he fell to the ground the men were kicking him. At this second interview, Smollett also told the officers that one of the attackers was white.
CHICAGO (WLS) — A Cook County grand jury has returned a 16-count indictment against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed the indictment, which they said was returned by a grand jury on Thursday.
Smollett was originally charged with one felony count of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on Feb. 20.
Now the grand jury has returned 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.

Mark Geragos, Smollett’s attorney, released a statement on Friday night calling the charges ‘redundant and vindictive‘:
The fact of an indictment is not unexpected. We knew that there is no way they would expose their evidence to a public airing and subject their witnesses to cross-examination.
What is unexpected however, is the prosecutorial overkill in charging 16 separate counts against Jussie. This redundant and vindictive indictment is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make headlines in order to distract from the internal investigation launched to investigate the outrageous leaking of false information by the Chicago Police Department and the shameless and illegal invasion of Jussie’s privacy in tampering with his medical records.
Jussie adamantly maintains his innocence even if law enforcement has robbed him of that presumption.

If convicted, Smollett could face up to 3 years in prison, however, experts believe that he will strike a plea deal.
Smollett has plead not guilty to the first charge but has not entered a plea on the new charges.
Chicago police have also launched an investigation into the leaks of false information about the case to the media.

I think that Smollett bought into the lyrics from the songs he sang on Empire a little too much. Check out his song, Good Enough, from the show that was featured on the Empire soundtrack.
The sad part is, this guy is truly talented and, according to Chicago police and because he was dissatisfied with his six-figure salary, he orchestrated the hate hoax. This was after he allegedly sent himself a fake threatening letter with a suspicious white powder which didn’t get the Media(D) attention that he hoped that it would.
No charges have yet been laid regarding the letter which could land Smollett with a more serious charge since it was sent through the mail.
Faking a hate crime is a horrible thing to do. It cheapens those that have actually experienced real bigotry and makes it harder for someone to come forward and be believed.
He even said as much in his tearful interview on ABC News with Robin Roberts after the attack:
And to think that he may have done this just to raise his own profile in Hollywood and garner a bigger salary is just disgusting. It goes to show you, though, that Hollywood isn’t concerned with merit anymore, but has fully bought into the cancerous identity politics of the left. Don’t believe me? Just watch an award show sometime. The most intersectional movie, actor, and storyline will win — even if it isn’t the best example of the art.
There were big red flags that the Media(D), celebrities, and major Democrats completely ignored when they jumped to condemn the attack on Smollett. To be fair, it wasn’t just the left that condemned the attack. When questioned about the incident immediately after it was reported, President Trump said, ‘I can tell you that it’s horrible. It doesn’t get worse,‘ but stopped short of calling it a ‘modern-day lynching’ as Senators Cory Booker and Kamala Harris did. That’s the difference, conservatives were quick to condemn any sort of attack based on bigotry but wanted to wait for all of the facts, while the left jumped into their zombie-like ‘believe all survivors’ mode and said that this was an example of just how racist and homophobic the United States is.
Unfortunately, that isn’t the United States in 2019.
Of course, there are individual instances of racism, but the claims of systemic racism is absolute bunk. I’m old enough to remember way back in 2008, when hopeful Americans (in a majority white country) elected a charismatic black President and then reelected him in 2012, in part to heal some of those racial divides.
It seems the ‘hope and change’ that we got, however, didn’t build on that pervasive belief held by the vast majority of the country that ‘all men are created equal’, but fed into the divisions that Americans thought had been put behind them after the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.
Yes, it did take a long time to get there, but how far we have come in such a short time. If only people like Jussie Smollett could see that.
