The woman behind the Sex and the City franchise told women that they could “have it all” but she has now admitted that she was wrong.
Candace Bushnell is now 60 and is realizing that prioritizing her career over raising a family was a terrible mistake.
Her best-selling book and the racy TV series it inspired taught a generation of women that they could ‘have it all’.
But Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell, 60, has admitted that she regrets choosing a career over having children as she is now ‘truly alone’.
She says that it wasn’t until her 2012 divorce from the ballet dancer, Charles Askegard, that she realized the importance of raising a family.
Bushnell admits that she didn’t think about having a family when she was younger, but now that she’s older, she sees that people with children have “an anchor” unlike those that are childless.
The former sex columnist, who is worth around £18million, told the Sunday Times: ‘When I was in my thirties and forties, I didn’t think about it.
‘Then when I got divorced and I was in my fifties, I started to see the impact of not having children and of truly being alone. I do see that people with children have an anchor in a way that people who have no kids don’t.’
Bushnell and Askegard married in 2002 when she was 53 when they filed for divorce in 2011. The divorce was finalized in 2012.
Even if Bushnell had wanted to have a child when she was married, she was already a bit late to the party. Her childbearing years were at their peak before she turned 40. But, hey, at least she’s a millionaire.
Bushnell is releasing a new book titled, Is There Still Sex in the City? a fictionalized version of the difficulties she faced when trying to bounce back after divorce and feeling alone in her fifties. She also talks about what she calls “middle-aged sadness” — she says that it’s more difficult to bounce back from bad news in your 50s than in your twenties or thirties. In addition, she said that women in their fifties are often blamed for the setbacks they had to overcome.
At 60, she is now dating again but her life is more subdued. Bushnell admits to having frequent botox and fillers, she says that it was turning the big 6-0 that “got rid of her sense of shame.”
The socialite, who first came to New York in the 1980’s, when Studio 50 was all the rage, thinks modern dating has made women angry and frustrated.
The writer admitted that she finds New York boring and consensual, and a ‘thousand time less fun’ than what it used to be.
However, she added that several editors had offered to help with her career in exchange of sexual favours, something she said was common at the time.
While she also revealed that the characters in her upcoming book had been sexually harassed at some point in their lives but would just have dealt with it and told the men to ‘go f*** themselves.’

Bushnell isn’t the only feminist that has told women that they could “have it all” and put off having children only to learn later that they were wrong.
How many women have been devastated by taking the advice of Bushnell and her ilk? Far too many.
Far too many people think of the “now” and don’t consider the future when making their plans.
