Hard to believe it’s been 30 years since the fall of that hated Berlin Wall, isn’t it? There is a reason we take time to remember such occasions. Because it’s easy to forget their true meaning.
For those too young to remember the Cold War, there was a time where a large swath of Europe was under Russia’s Soviet control, either directly — as part of the USSR — or in their sphere of influence (see: Warsaw Pact).
The Berlin Wall split the city in two. Anyone wondering why would have to follow that thread back to the conclusion of WWII and the peace settlement. Here’s a quick video recap of the rise and fall of the wall:
Long story short, Germany was split into East and West. East Germany became part of the larger Soviet block. And just like life under the Soviets elsewhere, it came at a great loss of personal freedom.
Ronald Reagan upset and angered leftists in the West with his bold and sometimes aggressive stand he took against Soviet Imperialism, and yet of all the words for which he is remembered, some of the most beloved are these which he uttered in the shadow of the Brandenberg Gate:
Only a few short years later, the Berlin Wall came down. Less than a year after that, Germany was reunited, and the Soviet Union broken.
So America hasn’t just helped save Europe from German aggression in a couple of World Wars, America has also played a role in saving Germany from their Soviet masters.
Silly American activists who have in common with Lenin’s politics than Washington’s have tried to object to Trump’s border wall by comparing it to East Germany.
Guess again, silly neo-soviets. There is an immense difference.
East Germans risked being SHOT DEAD in an effort to escape their socialist ‘utopia’, in an effort could gain access to the Freedoms enjoyed in the West. Crossing at a port of entry was not an option to them.
Border jumpers at the Rio Grande risk only the dangers of natural hazards and the cruelty of criminal cartels that profit off of human trafficking, as they try to ENTER a country that has lawful entry. The wall is built only to compel entry through the door.
So while Bernie and Warren promise to make America into the image of something resembling East Germany, Germany is celebrating how we saved them from that sad existence.
