When a police officer at one Starbucks shared that his cup has ‘pig’ where his name should be, friends of law enforcement were livid… but this story has a happy ending.
We didn’t run with this story right away because we didn’t want to run off half-cocked in a rush to judgment like we accuse the left of doing with their ‘cancel culture’.
So we let the story play out a bit, and we’re glad we did because the story now is much different than what it seemd to be at first.
At the outset, it seemed a cut-and-dried case of someone hating the police, and putting their personal hatred of an institution that keeps us safe ahead of their proper treatment as a paying customer. Calls for boycotts, firings and all the rest weren’t very far behind.
But that assumed some things about motive, didn’t it? Is there any OTHER possible explanation?
As it turns out, there was. It’s not great, mind you, but it’s not nearly as bad as open contempt.
“As he’s leaving the store, a customer points out the name on his cup. As they realize Starbucks has written ‘pig’ on the cup,” he said.
The chief said the Starbucks employee responsible for that has since apologized to the officer.
“She said that she did it on her own. I don’t think Starbucks prompted her to make the apology. She took it upon herself to apologize,” he said. “She said the reason she put the word pig down was because she wanted to play a joke on another barista.”
O’Mara said she explained that it wasn’t meant for the officer.
“Her intention was to see if the barista would yell out ‘pig’ when they announced that the order was ready. She said that it was not intended for the officer to see the word pig,” he said.
In a statement, Starbucks said the employee is suspended.

Unlike the default response of the Left, police are calling for civility.
Kiefer police chief Johnny O’Mara appeared on Fox News on Friday to talk about the incident involving one of his officers. O’Mara said the incident should be a learning experience and called for greater civility.
“I just recently learned that the employee was terminated, and this may be a bit surprising, but I would like Starbucks to reconsider. It was a mistake,” O’Mara said. “I’m asking for civility.”
Fox News host Ed Henry contested O’Mara, saying that the employee may have just been suspended. Either way, O’Mara asserted he did not want the employee fired over the incident.
“We are hoping that we can take this moment where a mistake was made and turn it into something that highlights the ability to be civil with one another, that’s something that’s missing in a lot of society right now is the ability to just be civil,” O’Mara said.

For anyone unfamiliar with a reaction like that, THIS is what a proportional response looks like.
A mistake was made. The person who did it owned up to it. An apology was given. Lessons were learned, and we all move on.
The cops took the high road, like a good neighbor should, not calling for some young barista’s head on a plate over an admittedly dumb decision.

They didn’t attack anyone. They saw someone treated badly and offered a solution to the problem.
The Left’s obsession with perpetual anger is unsustainable. Eventually, it will exhaust them. We saw it happen in previous generations.
When that happens, we put ourselves miles ahead if we have something positive to offer in its place.
Planting seeds like this that will be remembered by others is a small start, but it’s a good one.
