Pelosi Calls For Removal Of Confederate Statues But Remains Silent On Her Father’s Dedication Of One

***UPDATE: Ted Cruz noted that many of the statues that Pelosi is calling to be removed for their racism are actually Democrats.

The Democrats include Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who was once a U.S. senator from Mississippi; Mississippi Sen. James Zachariah George; Confederate Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton; and Confederate Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Pelosi.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi(D-CA), who has been in Congress for 33 years, suddenly, during the Trump administration, is seeing the problem of Confederate monuments in Washington D.C.

Now that there are roving bands of malcontents all over the U.S. enacting “social justice” by defacing and tearing down “problematic” statues based on their ideas of virtue and villainy, Speaker Pelosi is agreeing with the mob.

She’s not quite saying, “Tear ’em down!” but she is reflecting the views of these cancel culture cultists.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote a letter Wednesday asking for the removal of 11 statues of Confederate leaders from the National Statuary Hall collection at the U.S. Capitol….

…”The statues in the Capitol should embody our highest ideals as Americans, expressing who we are and who we aspire to be as a nation,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to Missouri Senator Roy Blunt, who chairs the Joint Committee on the Library, and vice-chairperson of the committee California Representative Zoe Lofgren. “Monuments to men who advocated cruelty and barbarism to achieve such a plainly racist end are a grotesque affront to those ideals.”

“Their statues pay homage to hate, not heritage,” the letter continued. “They must be removed.”

She’s also not saying a single word about her father dedicating a statue to honor Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in Wyman Park when he was mayor of Baltimore in 1948.

It’s especially interesting since Pelosi is denouncing the statues as inherently racist and her father’s dedication speech seemed to be…well…rather supportive of the Generals. His words were positively glowing.

It was May 2, 1948, when, according to a Baltimore Sun article from that day, “3,000” looked on as then-Gov. William Preston Lane Jr. and Pelosi’s father, the late Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., spoke at the dedication of a monument to honor Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

The article said Lane delivered a speech, and Mayor D’Alesandro “accepted” the memorial.

“Today, with our nation beset by subversive groups and propaganda which seeks to destroy our national unity, we can look for inspiration to the lives of Lee and Jackson to remind us to be resolute and determined in preserving our sacred institutions,” D’Alesandro said in his dedication. “We must remain steadfast in our determination to preserve freedom, not only for ourselves, but for the other liberty-loving nations who are striving to preserve their national unity as free nations.”

He added: “In these days of uncertainty and turmoil, Americans must emulate Jackson’s example and stand like a stone wall against aggression in any form that would seek to destroy the liberty of the world.”

Does this mean that Nancy Pelosi is the daughter of a Confederate-sympathizer? Recall that these words praising Confederate Generals who fought to preserve slavery is after World War II when we saw a genocide of Jews at the hands of a madman. Should the former mayor of Baltimore be canceled now? I don’t know what Thomas D’Alesandro was thinking when he wrote his speech and neither do you.

But Pelosi isn’t commenting and she might be able to shed some light on her father’s views.

The statue was removed in 2017 amidst the heated round of debate over Confederate statues and the conflict in Charlottesville, Virginia that resulted in the tragic death of Heather Heyer by a white supremacist. The media has labeled all of the protesters that wished to keep the statues as white supremacists and neo-Nazis, despite many coming forward saying that they didn’t want to erase portions of our history even if it is ugly.

Removing statues is a slippery slope. At one point, these individuals were deemed worthy enough to be commemorated as a statue. But they were also human, and humans are not perfect.

We have seen that even the paragons of virtue who have led some of the greatest movements have also been deficient in some way or another. Gandhi is being called a racist and sexist. It’s now being claimed that the great Civil Rights leader, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a serial adulterer and was allegedly present when a woman was raped. Let’s not even get started on the vilification of Christopher Columbus. 

What’s next, erasing the ancient Greeks because of their disturbing practice of pedastery?

Perhaps instead of “canceling” and “erasing” everyone who came before us, we need to acknowledge that imperfect people can still make incredible contributions to society at large and should be honored for those things.

Critics will say that honoring the Confederacy is wrong, period. I must say that I understand that sentiment. But we’ve also viewed the Civil War in a rather narrow way and neither side was willing to see that the other had a legitimate point. The South called it the “War of Northern Aggression” and a trampling of federalism, while the Union view is that the human rights issue of slavery was not something that could be tolerated anywhere within the United States. The South fighting for states’ rights could be defended, but that fight was based on the reprehensible, inhumane, utterly deplorable, and completely indefensible practice of slavery, which the North saw as a non-starter. [NOTE: Clearly, I’m with the Union on this one, lest anyone in the comments section suggest differently.]

History is complicated.

So are people. We need to acknowledge that or we won’t have anyone left to inspire greatness.
