WATCH: AOC Blames Skyrocketing Crime Rate In NYC To People Needing To ‘Steal Bread’

Does AOC think that she’s living in the middle of Les Misérables?

Over the weekend, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez(D-NY) made an astounding statement on the massive spike in crime in NYC–she says that it’s a result of people who are so poor that they need to “shoplift some bread or go hungry.”

AOC said this as news broke that a one-year-old was shot and killed on Sunday night in Brooklyn.

If people are killing children because they can’t afford bread, then there are some pretty huge problems in New York.

The freshman Congresswoman then bizarrely said that since the police didn’t stop the crime spike, even though it’s funded at $6 billion, New York should defund the police and spend the money on social services. Oddly, she didn’t mention the sudden spike in anti-police sentiment sweeping across the country and calls from leftist lawmakers (like her) to defund and/or dismantle police departments which is emboldening the radical “All Cops Are Bastards” crowd.

The spike in crime isn’t primarily people “shoplifting bread,” though–it’s the massive rise in violent crime.

The city recorded 43 shootings in the last week, up more than 300% from the same time period in 2019. Ten people were shot over a bloody July 4 weekend.

The progressive lawmaker counterintuitively suggested that cutting more funds from the NYPD would help stem the crime wave, apparently because that money could be channeled into social programs.

Washington Free Beacon writer, Charles Fain Lehman noted that the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis seemed to bring on a “Ferguson Effect” in the city with a spike in crimes occurring as activists demand that police be defunded.

He weighed in on AOC’s statement by tweeting that petty larceny rates in New York are down, but the murder rate is up year-to-date.

Since she thinks that this is a direct result of job loss and poverty, I’ll bet she’s still really proud of opposing Amazon bringing 23,000 jobs to her district, isn’t she?

Sadly, she probably is.
