The Trump administration is going after Chinese spies…and they’re getting results.
It’s pretty clear that the Trump administration isn’t taking so kindly to Chinese spying–especially after the way that China bungled the response to COVID-19 and allowed it to become a global pandemic that has killed more than 170,000 Americans to date.

Alexander Yuk Chung Ma, 67, worked for both the CIA and the FBI was arrested on August 14 and charged with “conspiracy to sell classified information, including ‘Top Secret’ level information, to China.” This could land the resident of Hawaii life in prison according to prosecutors. They also said that Ma was working with a relative who was also a former CIA officer, but that man is 85-years old and was not charged because he is suffering from a “debilitating cognitive disease.”
Ma, a naturalized U.S. citizen was born in Hong Kong. He began working for the CIA in 1982 and later worked as a linguist for the FBI. He was stationed overseas where he obtained his “Top Secret” level clearance before leaving the CIA in 1989. He lived in Shanghai from 1989 to 2000 when he moved to Hawaii.
Prosecutors said Ma turned allegiances by 2001, when he met several times with at least five officers of China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS), the country’s top intelligence agency, in a Hong Kong hotel room. During these meetings, Ma “disclosed a substantial amount of highly classified national defense information,” including the identities of CIA officers and assets, methods of covert communication, information about the CIA’s internal structure, and details about the agency’s spycraft.
The FBI procured video footage of one of the meetings in March 2001, which showed MSS agents paying Ma $50,000, which he counted while relaying the classified information, the court document said. It is unclear how the FBI obtained the footage.
Ma applied for a job with the FBI and in 2004 to continue to feed info to his Chinese Handlers. He was contracted as a Chinese linguist at the FBI’s Honolulu field office. He was tasked with reviewing and translating Chinese documents. According to an FBI affidavit, the day before he started his new job, Ma called a suspected accomplice and said that he would be working for “the other side.”
Over the next six years at the FBI, Ma regularly copied, photographed, and stole classified U.S. documents, including research on guided missiles and weapons systems. He then took these stolen documents and photographs with him on frequent trips to China to hand them to his MSS handlers, prosecutors said. He often returned from these trips with thousands of dollars in cash and expensive gifts, such as a new set of golf clubs.

Ma was captured after a thorough investigation including an FBI undercover agent posing as an MSS agent. The undercover agent approached Ma with the 2001 video footage of Ma’s meeting with the MSS to convince him that he was working for the Chinese intel agency. The undercover agent paid Ma $2,000 as a “small token” of appreciation for the years of work he had done for the MSS and Ma agreed to feed more information to China. In another meeting with the undercover agent, Ma said that he wanted “the motherland” to succeed.
But now, he’s facing justice.
China’s extensive espionage is a huge threat globally. They want world domination, and they’re trying to do it through domination in all things rather than out-right war.
China has been sending out spies all over the world for years. They steal intellectual property from private companies, set up indoctrination centers on our college campuses, influence international organizations like the WHO, send out propagandists posing as journalists, and embed spies within the U.S. bureaucracy. If they’re really lucky they might manage to get a spy to work for two decades with a sitting U.S. Senator who was a member of the East Asian and Pacific Affairs subcommittee of the Foreign Relations Committee. *cough*Dianne Feinstein(D-CA)*cough*
China’s spying on private companies is atrocious.
What may not have made too many headlines in the U.S. was the destruction of Canada’s greatest tech company, Nortel, because of Chinese espionage. While it was heavily suspected that China was using a “vacuum cleaner approach” to steal all of Nortel’s secrets, it was confirmed just how extensive that spying was when Canada’s Department of National Defense purchased the building of the now-defunct Nortel for their new headquarters in 2013. It was going to be “Pentagon North.” The DND considered abandoning the $1 billion move because the building was “riddled with eavesdropping devices.”
Nortel was the crown jewel in what had become “Silicon Valley North” in Ottawa, and when it was gone, it devasted the local economy, and people lost their pensions when the company went under. The collapse of Nortel was immediately followed by the rise of the Chinese tech company, Huawei, which used Nortel’s patents, and is now a global cybersecurity threat. That’s the same Huawei that is trying to provide infrastructure for 5G networks all over the world.

If you think that’s bad, just imagine what the Chinese could do with the “top secret” intel that they were fed by Ma and God only knows how many others.
