It’s always easy to be the Monday morning quarterback and dunk on how ‘those’ people handled a situation when you’re not the one in it.
It takes a little more self-awareness to honestly ask yourself if you would have handled it any differently.
One of the big places Christians miss this point is in our reading of the gospels. Look at those dumb smucks — the promised Messiah was staring him right in the face and they were too blind to see it.
Jesus understood that reaction was coming in his day even after the resurrection (He said as much in Luke 16:31), but we have a pretty high opinion of ourselves.
If he had come in OUR day, we tell ourselves, we would never have been so blind as to reject Jesus.
Peter proudly told Jesus, even if everyone else betrays you, I won’t. But he did. Of course he did.
And if we’re really honest…? You and I probably would have done the same. Because the Baptized-in-Lysol Jesus we see in pop culture or the Western Christian idealized mind looks a lot different from what The Book itself tells about that Rowdy Rebel From Galilee.
