Hello Hypocrite Alert: Gabby Giffords’s Husband Buys AR-15

Screen Shot 2013-03-10 at 5.09.56 PM Mark E. Kelly, gun-control proponent and husband to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, recently purchased an AR-15 (an “assault weapon,” he called it)—which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.

Kelly reportedly bought the AR-15 and a 1911-style semi-automatic pistol at a gun store in Tucson, Arizona.
Breitbart News received a tip on this when Neil McCabe, editor of Guns & Patriots newsletter, contacted us on March 7 and said:

Mark E. Kelly, made purchases which included an AR-15–sometimes described as an “assault rifle”–at 3:30 pm on the afternoon of March 5 at Diamondback Police Supply, 170 S. Kolb Street, Tucson, AZ.

According to McCabe, witnesses to the purchases claimed Kelly purchased “high capacity” magazines as well.

On March 6, McCabe contacted Kelly’s gun control group–”Americans for Responsible Solutions”–and on March 8 they replied that his message had been passed on to colleagues who handle press requests. Breitbart News then began investigating the details surrounding the purchase, including visiting the gun store.

Suddenly, Kelly announced on his Facebook page that he was not going to keep the AR-15, which he has yet to pick up from the store.

Days after making the purchases, Kelly wrote on Facebook:

I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a .45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes. I don’t have possession of it yet but I’ll be turning it over to the Tucson PD when I do.

He is also a man with a reason to demonstrate the ease with which such a weapon could be acquired ; and with the shooting of his wife and the deaths of six other people in his recent history, $1000 would not be a lot to demonstrate his argument and concerns.

        There is definitely a need to address the issue of the mentally unstable (which is not made any easier by cuts to funding in mental health programs and severe shortages of mental health professionals) ; I merely point out that the suggestion that Mr Kelly was not in his right mind, being someone who would spent $1000 on a firearm only to turn it over, had little merit. If you want to effect your proposal, which does have merit, then you need to campaign for increases in mental health care programs and spending.

The attack on Sen. Gifford and the others was criminal. However, the moral value of the pistol and extended magazine used by the attacker was neither “good” nor “bad”, and no more lethal for a person who was shot than a bullet from a five shot revolver would have been. The added efficiency provided by a magazine fed pistol benefits the “good” use of the arm the same as it does for the “bad” use of it. The hardware is just inanimate objects. The murderer alone is responsible for the harm caused.

The length of time required to complete a background check when purchasing any legal firearm is immaterial to the accuracy of the check. If there is no negative information then by law the purchase is approved. I would think that Mark Kelly didn’t expect his check to take any longer than that for anyone else who had a clean criminal history. The same check would serve for his purchase of both the 1911 pistol and the used AR-15, as only one check was required for both when purchased at the same time.

He claimed he was planning to turn the AR-15 over to the police. Was his intent in purchasing the AR-15 to prevent someone else from getting it? He has that right, but it doesn’t speak well for his concern for other law abiding citizens given that, partially because of his efforts in seeking to restrict AR-15s and standard capacity magazines, very few AR-15s are now available for those who want one. He just wants to infringe on
the God given rights of other law abiding people to keep and bear the arms they prefer.

- The shooter stayed at a cheap motel the night before the shooting. The motel clerk said that the door opened and closed all night long.
- The shooter did not have a job, but he came home the next morning with a black bag before the shooting. His father asked him what was in the bag, and he chased him down the street trying to find out what was in the bag.
- The shooter got away, but the bag was turned into the police with ammo and a clear bag filled with money…lots of bills. No job. The shooter had thrown the bag away & it was found.
- Was the shooter paid to do anything concerning illegal immigration? Why did Daniel Hernandez, standing next to Obama, state at the memorial, “We are all Americans now!” That statement had no connection with the memorial.
- Daniel worked in the Mayor’s office. Daniel conducted meetings with homosexuals, The shooter was a homosexual. Photos were taken of the shooter the night before with a G string and a Glock gun in his buttocks. Walgreens called the police after the shooting to turn in the photos that were left there for developing.
