I hope noone has taught boys/men its ok to take and rape women. Just know, there are robbers because some think they are owed what someone else has because they want it and there are boys/men that feel they can do rape because they want it. No crime prevention proposal is ever likely to be 100% successful, and there are people who are pathologically wicked and incapable of empathizing with other human beings ; but general shifts in attitudes are possible, however civilized we currently believe ourselves to be.

    Like at least one other respondent on this topic, I was raised in an environment where a range of values was taught, including the immorality of theft, causing hurt, and the abuse of girls. It’s been my experience, in mature societies, that people in general are not so much dissuaded from committing crimes because of the punishment, so much as deterred by sense of guilt. That’s a cultural phenomenon, not a genetic one, and like all cultural phenomena, capable of inculcation. This is how societies change, from those that had bases in racism, to those that see racism disappearing into the horizon of social history. That doesn’t happen automatically, it requires education and the establishment of cultural norms that can influence the way people behave.

When I was growing up, it was understood among boys that you never, ever, EVER hit, push, kick, trip or otherwise do harm to a girl for any reason whatsoever….no provocation was sufficient, and no excuses.
Any boy who forgot this rule was considered a sissy and less than a male, and it took a LONG time for him to live it down. This wasn’t even something we had to be taught, it was just something we knew and enforced amongst ourselves.
So the idea that you’re not supposed to rape a women was pretty much a no-brainer. But I guess it’s not that simple for liberals.

    To Bulldog 74 also, keep in mind that the general culture of sexual imagery has been around a very long time, to stimulate men, for many reasons, and that male aggression has been praised, in many cases without the constraints you were also taught. The combination has taught larger percentages of men that rape is acceptable and in a way “good”. I grew up in a time when some of the guys around me did know that, and many didn’t at the same time, but also in a time when the rape victim was blamed for the act, and penalized again by the “justice” system, while the perpetrator was often subtly praised.

According to a look at the National Crime Victimization Survey, 2008, most rapists of white women are white men, and most rapists of black women are non-white. One can quibble over the racial stratification here, but the crime statistics, prima facie, do not support your argument.

  Unfortunately, male rape by violent gay predators is one of the most unreported crimes in the country, mainly because of the shame of the victim having to admit he couldn’t stop the act. It occurs more frequently than rape of women, who recognize there’s no shame in admitting being overpowered by a stronger male rapist, and receive sympathy from medical and law personnel that the male victims do not.

If you live in a family where the husband/man/lover of the mother treats her like dirt, slaps her around then how can you expect the kid to grow up any different.       It’s a little hard to figure out the disconnect between ‘no one deserves to be raped’, and ‘one can only hope she gets raped’. If rape is wrong, then it’s wrong. If you think somebody should be raped because of what they say, then all that separates you from the rapist is choice of reason. Maybe that’s “legitimate rape”. If you suggest that a woman should be raped, presumably for being too mouthy or having a the wrong political or social opinion, what is there that gives you any kind of moral leverage above some run-of-the-mill Taliban misogynist?

      This isn’t actually what she said. The crux of her argument is that of trying to prevent that situation arising in the first place. Her argument has been that so far, most of society’s efforts at prevention of sexual assaults has been directed at telling women things like, don’t drink, don’t wear skirts, don’t be attractive, and very little about creating a paradigm shift among men. It has been about telling women not to be victims, and not telling men not to be victimisers. Most women are raped by men they know and trust, not men who have singled them out to be dragged into a dark alley. In that context, her argument makes sense.

I saw that segment and as a woman I found it entirely demeaning. As a rape victim she displayed a rather stupid and simplistic view of the subject. And, yes, I could and would shoot someone attempting to rape me, relative, friend or whatever. As mothers, we all know that we can attempt to teach children, but there comes a time when “no don’t touch, it will harm you” does not work. The child learns that lesson the hard way.

Even the Left DOES get it right sometimes. Teaching men to HEED the word “NO!” as the complete sentence it is, and that rape is NOT acceptable is part of the solution. Teaching them that their rights STOP at that point at which they infringe on the rights of one or more other persons, is realistiic; for too long men have assumed they had the right to TAKE whatever they wanted from any woman, wife or not, and that just isn’t so. Also teaching them to FEEL the harm that a rape does to a woman would be wise and helpful. That doesn’t mean women don’t have a responsibility too. They DO, to not behave or dress themselves in overtly immodest and provocative manners. No, I’m not saying clothing or lack thereof is an excuse for rape, but I am saying that women by their choices, DO contribute to a small extent, also in how they raise and teach their sons!
