Over the weekend, teachers and school administrators from across Wisconsin attended the 15th annual White Privilege Conference in Madison. The event was held to train teachers to fight notions of “white privilege” and “white supremacy” in schools. While most people would have had no problem with the conference had it been a nonpartisan effort to promote equal opportunity in the classroom, it was most certainly not that:
#1 – It taught that white people are inherently racist. While leading a breakout session, a former teacher compared being white to alcoholism. She stated, ”I will never be recovered by my alcoholism, to use the metaphor. I have to everyday [sic] wake up and acknowledge that I am so deeply embedded with racist thoughts and notions and actions in my body that I have to choose everyday [sic] to do anti-racist work and think in an anti-racist way.”
#2 – It proclaimed that the education system should have a political agenda. One presenter stated, ”If you don’t want to work for equity, get the f*ck out of education. If you are not serious about being an agent of change that helps stifle the oppressive systems, go find another job. Because you are a political figure.”
