According to a study by Pew Research Center, there were only 9,000 Muslims in Cuba, and the country’s Muslim population has been fairly stagnate.

Now, we may know why Islam has grown very little in the Caribbean country.

Cuba currently has zero mosques. Muslims are forced to meet and pray in the privacy of their own homes, reports the World Bulletin.

Pedro Lazo Torres, the leader of Havana’s Muslim community, decided to take action, joining forces with Turkey’s Religious Affairs Foundation (TDV).

In April, TDV assistant manager Mustafa Tutkun requested permission to begin construction on a large mosque, which was to be designed after the famous Ortakoy mosque in Istanbul.
