Remember when she donned rhetorical blackface and informed the assembled “I doant fee-uhl no wayz tie-urd, I’ve traveled too fahr to git whar I’m goin. Nobody told mee et wood be eazee”.
She went down south again and conjured up her inner soul sistah once more. “You’re not gonna see me turn white”, she did declare.
The conservative in all of us says “okay, but she was joking about dying her hair’ which in itself is rich – although not as rich as the Clinton Global Initiative. Fine. For fun, let’s for a moment apply progressive dog whistles and see where it takes us.
Was she referring to race? Does she believe that because Bill was America’s “first black President” that she inherits black authenticity? If not, does this mean she doesn’t support interracial marriage? Does it mean Bill was her jungle fever? Is she gay? I bet she’s gay and even if she’s not she could still be gay — is she gay?
“Not gonna see me turn white”. Is she down with the struggle? But if she suggests “turning white” is that an admission on her part that her blackness isn’t authentic at all? Do black lives matter or not? Has anyone seen Hillary wear a hoodie? Chelsea doesn’t look a damned thing like Trayvon! She don’t need to, look what Bill did when he was President.
Why did she eat at Chipotle and not at a soul food joint? The “Scooby Van” could have taken her anywhere and, oh, by the way, why did she use a white-as-the-driven-snow Scooby Van instead of a Sanford and Son pick-up truck or a low rider with a bounce kit. Yo, man, Hillary in a low rider would speak deep to the people. But she can come how she wants to and eat how she wants to for she is here to tell us what we need to do.
As silly as all that sounds, among young progressives, that’s as challenged as Hillary is going to get. It’s a constituency that wasn’t born in 1988 when Bill abandoned his first Presidential bid due to scandal. (That’s right, he backed out in ’88). A voting bloc that was in kindergarten well after 9/11 and the beginnings of OEF and OIF. The informed of their number will discuss Hillary in such terms. Their uninformed majority probably doesn’t realize that in 2016 Obama’s replacement is chosen through an electoral process.
Because Hillary’s come to tell them what to do. That’s what they hunger for. They hunger for a singular figure to pester them as though the founders intended our President be their nanny.
What a shame.
