THE POLITICAL CHRISTIAN: Do We Have Any Choice?

A friend of mine told me a while back that there are two ways to start an argument on Facebook: 1.) State an opinion; and 2.) wait.   I recently experienced this to be very true.  Please allow me to explain.

I recently reposted a picture of Ted Nugent holding a pistol, captioned with the phrase “How To Annoy A Liberal”.  I found this on FB and reposted on my band’s FB page.  The band in question is GHF, which stands for God Has Forgiven.  It’s comprised of myself and two other members of the original Petra lineup.

Okay, technically, it is a music site.  but like a lot of sites, it goes off topic now and then.  The Internet, and especially FB, can be a real minefield of clutter – food pictures, pet pictures, recipes, slogans, sunsets, etc., etc.– and, of course, politics.

The issue here is that I was taken to task and told that politics don’t belong on the site, that it’s annoying, even un-Christian.  Oh, really…so Christians aren’t supposed to be politically aware, ever?

My personal view, and I want to stress it’s MY PERSONAL VIEW, is that it’s spiritually suicidal not to be politically aware, and even politically involved to some degree.  Some Christians want to continually shut the world out and live in a vacuum.  According to that mind set, as long as we have our church services, our retreats, seminars and concerts, as along as we still have all of our Christian paraphernalia, then everything will be hunky-dory because, hey, it’s “of the Lord”.

Not so.  Not any more.  Not according to Ephesians 6:12.  “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”  (KJV).

Consider some of the following examples of how this particular scripture is being fulfilled.

On April 23rd, Hillary Clinton, speaking at the 2015 Women In The World Summit, said in regard to abortion:  “Laws have to be backed up with resources and political will, and deep seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.”

Our own president, Barack Hussein Obama, when addressing the U.N. General Assembly on September 25th, 2012, said this:   “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”   Sounds like a threat to me.  Ever remember any other American president saying something like that?  What can you really expect, though, since part of Obama’s upbringing was in a totally Islamic environment.  He has no Judeo/Christian reference point.  (Jeremiah Wright doesn’t count.)

Marine Lance Corporal Monifa Sterling was demoted in rank and discharged from service on February 1, 2014, in a court martial at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  The reason?   She had taped a small strip of paper to her computer with a paraphrased version of Isaiah 54:17 :  “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.”  She was told it was considered offensive and told to take it down.  She refused.  She’s now out of the Marine Corps and looking for a job.

Within the church itself, you can find  examples of spiritual naivety,  even spiritual wickedness.   Recently, a British theologian named Krish Kandiah, writing for the Christian Today web site on May 19, 2015, said this about gun ownership: “The fact that the Constitution allows something does not automatically mean it would be appropriate for Christians to bear arms…Perhaps instead Christians might choose to lay aside their rights and even the pleasure they get from hunting to see fewer people die. ”

Personally, since this “theologian” is British, I really don’t give a rat’s fuzzy little rump what he thinks.  He just proves that there are two things liberals don’t like about a citizen owning a gun: 1.) The 2nd Amendment means they (liberals)  can’t have control; and 2.) they have a hard time with the idea of an individual exercising the concept of personal responsibility.

Liberals also can’t grasp the fact that not every gun owner is a criminal.  To your basic liberal mindset, guns are only used to commit robberies and murders, right?  The fact that most gun owners are totally law abiding citizens is foreign to the liberal mind because personal responsibility is also foreign to the liberal mind.

These are tame examples of what Christians are facing in this country.  We all know what is happening to our brother and sister believers in Islamic countries.   No need to detail that here, just pay attention to the news.

Christianity is under assault here in our own country in a way I never thought I’d ever see in my lifetime.   I never thought I’d ever see Islam threaten our way of life from within our own borders.  I never thought I’d ever hear about a beheading on American soil.   I never thought I’d ever have to realize that if Islam and Sharia were to take hold here, everything we know and love as Christians would be done away.  Our churches would be burnt down…and Christian music, well, there is no music in Islam.

Liberals hate the very thing that allows them to be liberals in the first place.  It’s called Freedom.  That’s why they want to silence us, disarm us, and given the chance, eradicate us, if they could.  Political awareness belongs on every Christian web site and Internet presence.  Political ignorance of what’s going on outside of our comfortable, “churchy” world won’t stop the rot.  We can still make a difference.

And, if you don’t want to read anything political, then don’t.  That’s your choice.  Just be grateful that you still have the ability to make that choice.
