The ‘Calling 911’ Myth: Police Protection versus Personal Protection

Such incidents like these could have been avoided if the woman owned a gun. As of this date, Oregon does not require a permit to purchase a firearm, nor does it require registration or licensing. Thus, if the woman had a gun, her ex-boyfriend would have been scared off or shot. In fact, there are many cases of civilians using firearms to stop criminals (some are even mentioned in Stevens’ book). Unfortunately, the mainstream liberal media hardly reports such incidents.

It should be noted that the sheriff’s department was shorthanded due to budget cuts. In his book, Seven Myths of Gun Control: Reclaiming the Truth About Guns, Crime, and the Second Amendment, author Richard Poe discusses the crime issue, stating some people argue that putting more police on the streets will reduce crime. Poe counters by emphasizing the budget axe (in which the number of police officers would be reduced) and that there is no such thing as a permanent budget.

In conclusion, people are better off relying on personal protection (i.e. a gun) instead of waiting for the police to come rescue them, because they might not show up in time. This is why gun control is a bad idea.
