Random Thoughts from Andrew Linn

Also, when it comes to lawn care, I have a simple plan: get as much as you can with the lawn mower, then use the weed eater on what you can’t get with the mower. For some yards, you might have to use a three-step process: 1) the ride mower (especially for big yards), 2) the push mower (to get what the ride mower can’t get), and 3) the weed eater (for what the push mower can’t get).

4. Baggage fees — should they be charged at all, or eliminated? And if some airlines do charge for baggage, wouldn’t it be wiser to include the baggage fee in the price of an airline ticket? Doing so would make things a little easier for someone who is checking in at the airport, especially if the ticket has already been purchased. Excess luggage, pet cages, etc. are possible exceptions, but online purchasing of airline tickets might be able to cover these areas (if they haven’t been implemented already) thus saving the passenger a few headaches.

5. Government fees (e.g. licenses, permits, applications, etc.) — are they necessary? And if so, they should be inexpensive (less than $100 at all government levels). Plus, the fees should not be increased, which has been the case in some places. After all, aren’t our tax dollars supposed to be paying for these services?

6. All-star games. Does anyone watch them? Plus, are they necessary? I sometimes wonder if they are a burden to players who are trying to help get their teams into the playoffs, or to players who just won a championship (e.g. college football) then have to turn around and practice for such a game? If I was selected for an all-star game and was playing or coaching in a January bowl game, I don’t think I would be too happy about having to practice for an all-star game right after winning a bowl game (especially if it was for the national championship). Sometimes, they have to leave (and in some cases even have to practice) the day after a major bowl game.

In the case of college football, the all-star game might not be as burdensome (or popular) as it once was. But in professionals sports, particularly the NFL, all-star games have been criticized as well. The Pro Bowl, once held the week after the Super Bowl, might be a distraction for any players or coaches participating in both events. Now it’s held the week before the Super Bowl, but it can still be a potential burden. Players and coaches can opt out of it, however.
