God-Haters’ Slander: Falwell, the Moral Majority and Racism?
According to a Dartmouth professor, Jerry Falwell wasn’t so concerned about moral decline in America. Rather, he wanted to stop Blacks from attending Christian Schools.
Obviously a left wing hit piece, absurd on its face. If you want the accurate history of the Moral Majority, read Cal Thomas(1) and Tom Minnery(2), both Christians, deeply involved in the cause, men who disagree about the role of Christians in political activism and some of the methods used during the 70s and the 80s. This Slate piece is propaganda, a clever attempt to paint racist all who oppose abortion and aspects of the women’s liberation movement: Rev. Jerry Falwell, Weyrich, Jones, Schlafly and others.
The thrust of the Slate piece: it was not Roe v. Wade (1973) that sparked the creation of the Moral Majority, it was Brown v. Board of Education (1954), prompting Falwell and others to fight for segregation at Christian schools. The Moral Majority was founded in 1979 by Rev. Falwell. At the time Falwell was advocating for a return to traditional morality, alarmed by the pro-abortion movement, calling evangelicals to pay attention to social issues and the moral decline being promoted by secularism.
Fair-minded people know Christian schools then were trying to protect their mission, not discriminate or exclude people of color. As usual, the story is a bit more complicated than Slate and the professor let on:

You’ll notice the writer at Slate does not offer source material but relies entirely on Prof. Balmer. Reading Balmer’s work it is also curious to see his “scholarship” contains no source material. It is essentially a train of assertions and opinion without substantiation. He accomplishes what many on the left employ: ignoring the big picture while elevating the exception to become the rule.
The Moral Majority sprang up from the alarm within the evangelical community over a number of issues, most having to do with assaults by the left on traditional values. But you see, leftists not only expect us to stand silent as they attack us, they demand we help them promote their agenda. They have achieved their goals for the most part: the church is silent, and the country is almost thoroughly demoralized. The church is now enlisted in promoting both the homosexual and radical environmental agendas.
The work of the civil rights movement has been set back 50 years thanks to the attitudes and provocations of the left and by the activism of Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Jeremiah Wright, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Racial tension through provocation, as in this Slate article, is at all time highs.
Men and women, the home, the family and children have been divided and sent into chaos by immorality, permissiveness, a focus on self, the seeds of suspicion sown between men and women. Moral chaos reigns. Consider how the left decries gun violence when they are largely responsible for it. They destroy the foundations supporting good behavior.
Unrestrained by transcendent moral authority, combined with rampant drug use, and the daily dose of violence in movies and video games, young people snap and do terrible things.
Falwell and others were simply warning people about one simple truth: human beings without God tend to become animals. The majority was calling people back to morality for the sake of everyone’s security and prosperity. Balmer would have you believe that good work is racist at its core.
Tragically, the god-haters work another agenda: divide, conquer, destroy, and make government their god so they can indulge every whim and rule the world. The way has been paved by abortion and other measures including various “movements” all designed to destroy Christianity, the only barrier to this madness. Thus, 55 million babies have been shredded in the womb, an unprecedented holocaust making all of us callous and complicit, and for what? So people can more readily get laid without taking responsibility for their behavior. What a price to pay for a five second orgasm.
In truth Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, was a real racist. One of her goals was the eradication of Blacks.

And indeed, a disproportionate number of Black babies are murdered in the womb in this country every day. Blacks comprise 12% of the population, but 35% of abortions performed are in the Black community. The Black family has been decimated. After 65 years of the Great Society and leftist “solutions” Blacks suffer in every category at disproportionate rates. Economically, they have declined most in the last six years, ironically under a Black president.

I doubt you’ll ever hear about these realities from Prof. Balmer. For him and others, targeting Christians is more important than truth, with false accusations of racism the favored weapon.
