Tony Dungy would not have drafted Michael Sam – because Sam’s sexual orientation would create a distraction.

The former Buccaneers and Colts coach, now an analyst for NBC, thinks Sam has a chance to make it in the league. He would have preferred to let another team deal with the extra attention surrounding the first openly gay player drafted in the NFL.

“I wouldn’t have taken him,’’ Dungy told the Tampa Tribune. “Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.’’
