MEMO TO PACKERS: Champions Play for 7. . .Not 3!

Although I am a Green Bay Packers fan, I predicted they would lose their game against the Seattle Seahawks when they went for a field goal rather than a touchdown early in the first quarter. Everyone in our viewing group laughed.

When Green Bay repeated this lack of commitment a few minutes later, I repeated my prediction. Again, everyone laughed!

However, I knew one can’t beat a high-powered team like the Seahawks by giving up eight points.

Late in the fourth quarter, after the Seahawks scored, I predicted a successful onside kick and a Seahawk victory. I did so much to my chagrin. As I said, I wanted Aaron Rogers and Green Bay to compete in the Super Bowl.

But I knew they wouldn’t defeat Pete Carroll’s team with anything less than an all out commitment. Settling for three when you should get seven – settling for six when you should have fourteen – is a loser’s mentality – especially when you’re playing last year’s Super Bowl champions.

I’m not claiming infallibility here – just common sense. Winners attract victory – losers play it safe and more often than not come up short of the mark.

Life is kind of that way, isn’t it?

It sort of reminds me of some of our politicians playing-it-safe losses recently.
