A man who posted anti-religious sentiments online has been arrested after three Muslim students were shot dead close to the University of North Carolina campus on Tuesday.
Craig Stephen Hicks, who describes himself as a vehement supporter of atheism, has been charged with three counts of murder after the trio were shot dead in Meadowmont around 5pm.
Dentistry student Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, of Chapel Hill, his new wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, of Chapel Hill and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, of Raleigh, all died.
Hicks, 46, of Chapel Hill, turned himself in ‘without incident’ and is currently being held in Durham County jaill. He is due to make a court appearance this morning.
He is believed to have turned himself in to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in Pittsboro after the triple shooting.
On a Facebook page in his name, Hicks shared a number of anti-religion posts, describing himself as a supporter of ‘Atheists for Equality’. A banner about ‘anti-theism’ is prominent on his page.
Hicks posted a photo from United Atheists of America on February 8, which has the title ‘why radical Christians and radical Muslims are so opposed to each others’ influence when they agree about so many ideological issues’.
